Week 43 - AnyTech365 Challenger 80 (€44,820) - Marbella, Spain (clay)

Jay's draws aren't getting any easier:

L32:  (8) Jozef Kovalik (SVK) WR 125 (CH = 80 in October 2018) vs Jay Clarke WR 189 (CH = 153 in July last year)  hmm

Jay had a nice 'easy' draw last week

You can't complain with a guy ranked 230 or so

And Jay has broken, to lead *2-1, although early days

But I quite like Jay's game on clay - it suits the trajectory he gets

FIrst set to Jay, 6-3

With Jay having led 5-1 at one point

But his opponent was pretty riled, and I think he's now settling down a bit.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the second set a lot tighter

Well done, Jay.

Very good match.

He plays for the fault, which can be a little frustrating to watch, and he could easily have a better balance in that regard, which is probably something he's working on.

But it was percentage tennis, in a clay court style, good use of his legs, some good serves, and stuck in their well, despite his opponent's am-dram.

Seven ATP points and 730 euros is a nice start.

Well done Jay - had to go out and Jay conveniently won just as we arrived at our destination, when I would have had to stop following the score!!

He did win a match last week....

Let's see if he can win two this week.

A very pleasant surprise to see on Twitter, since I thought Jay wasn't even playing this week biggrin

Just hope he can get some consistency together as this seems to have been a problem in the past.

Hmm, not sure I'd put any money on it, but then, I'm not a betting woman:

L16:  Jay Clarke WR 189 vs Carlos Taberner (ESP) WR 158 (CH = 148 last month)

about time Jay won some matches, he has been a huge disappointment last 18 months. How he is ranked in top 200, must be some sort of optical illusion, as can't remember him winning back to back matches in ages .

You can't actually drop that far in the rankings these days since in these covid times no points are coming off or have come off in respect of any points earned since March 2019 ( and originally due to come off from March 2020 on ).

If you are not adding points you are liable to drop a bit as these players adding points can ovetake you but no-one really falls signifcantly.

Anyway, that's 8 points for Jay last week ( where his ranking stayed at 189 ) and 7 so far this week. Hopefully more to come.

The Ranking Gods will catch up on folk eventually.
