Matilda Mutavdzic

I suddenly realised that Matilda doesn't have her own thread - now that can't be right smile

Matilda (born 2004) won her first adult ITF 15k title a few weeks ago, and got herself a nice starter WTA ranking too (WTA 1028)

She's now ranked Junior ITF 24

She's the LTA's top girl hope (leaving aside Emma Raducanu who only has a couple of months left as a junior) and has recently moved to Spain to Nadal's academy, and a very exciting prospect.

However, one thing I never realised is that Matilda is one of triplets!!!!

Now that's a pretty rare achievement, if nothing else smile

You drew   Matilda  being a triplet  to my  attention. Never read that before.   It seems she has 2 brothers. There have been some twins in tennis. The Bryans and Pliskovas come to mind.  Eugenie Bouchard is also a twin.  Roger Federer  and his wife have  2 sets of twins.

Interesting do her siblings play tennis! Two brothers what fantastic competition. I am sure ex Brit Alijaz Bedenes brother was (and still is) a significant factor in how he got to the level he has.

As Matilda (born 2004) makes the final of the 15k in Egpyt (losing 3-6 3-6 to Lily Miyazaki), here's a nice little article from last autumn

www.tennis365.com/news/british-junior-matilda-mutavdzic-hoping-to-prove-heather-watson-wrong/

Shows her journey - UK to Serbia to Belgium to Spain.

But also some interesting insights into Rafa's academy.

I particularly liked:

As I was there training it just ticked all the boxes, in terms of how professional everyone was, the goals that they put first in terms of not results but how youre developing as a player as well as a person.

Congratulations to Matilda and her team for choosing the three W25 tournaments in South Africa. She was ranked WR 829 before and is now WR 599.

It was a good choice on two counts. One, weak tournaments and she was lucky in the opponents that she faced{eg WCs} and Two,the fact that W25 tournaments have a temporary boost in points.

However given all that Matilda had to win through qualifying over three weeks- which she did and reached the QF in the first two tournaments.

As has been documented Matilda is not tall and has no big weapons although she does hit the ball well and consistently, She has to stay on focus, plan well and stay healthy for a bright future in tennis.

She is definitely on the right path. She is in a series of W25 tournaments in Israel and has qualified for the main draw in the first of these tournaments. She is in the world top 600 and British no 18. Good luck

Matilda.

Well said, DF.

And she's now just beaten a top 500 player in two sets, in the Israel 25k.
As you say, some sensible choices, both in terms of tennis events, and her training camp, and everything. It seems to be working well for her at the moment.

Add: edited as per christ below - got mixed up between a 15 and a 25 :(

 125k is a bit ambitious!

And as of today, 21/10/21 (a nice date if ever there was one), Matilda beats a girl ranked WTA 328

Israel,25k: R2: MUTAVDZIC, Matilda (GBR) (Q) 599 def NOSKOVA, Linda (CZE) (8) 328 6-3 2-6 7-5

And then made to the final, but couldn't quite get the title:

F: MUTAVDZIC, Matilda (GBR) Q 599 lost to PAQUET, Chloe (FRA) 2 165 3-6 3-6

Shout out to Matilda who soars into the top 500.

Now ranked WTA 448, up 153 places, still aged 17.

Have to wonder if she would be even better ranked of all those 2019 points were removed?

Great news!

Oh, I'm sure she would be a fair bit higher ranked without 2019 points of which she herself has a whole 1 point.

Matilda's 110 points at 01/11 ( which will become 117 points at 08/11 ) are split :

2021 : 98

2020 : 11

2019 :   1

Are there any historic ranking lists anywhere? You could compare where 110 points would put you in the rankings if you compared to this week in 2019 for example.

There are a bunch of historic lists here:

... a bit thin recently, though.

The WTA site has a filter so you can look back at past rankings lists

November 4th 2019 would have given a player on 110 points a ranking of 398-400...so she might be circa 50 places higher and on edge of top 400 based on that very brief analysis!
