David Mercer

I read on the BBC/Sport/Tennis website that David Mercer has passed away at the age of 70. He was well known as an umpire and  commentator on radio and television. He umpired the 1984  Wimbledon mens singles final between John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors.

RIP and thoughts go out to his family.

I read that and remember his umpiring and being on Radio 2 before Radio 5 as radio tennis correspondent. Always seemed s very nice guy. RIP

Very sad news. His voice was instantly recognisable, and I always enjoyed his commentary, which evidenced his first-hand experience, particularly in the umpire's chair.

Yes, an 'old school ' commentator but genuinely interested in the players as people you felt. Nice interview with him (in Dubai I think) from 2013.

I would agree with the sentiments above.
I always thought him a very considered and knowledgeable commentator and came across as a genuinely good bloke.
Sad to hear of his death at what is a relatively young age and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Sad to hear of his death, he was one of my favourite commentators.
