Im voting for Steffi. Although Court is tops on slams, Steffi has a golden slam, most #1's, and when Court, Navratilova and Graf are all so equal, it is the fact Graf did it more recently and with strong competition that edges it for me. And graciously as well

No denying that Margaret Court won many other Slams, at least twice in each indeed at singles, women's doubles and mixed. But her particularly extravagent haul at the Australian Open probably owed a fair bit to the weaker Aus Open fields in these days compared to the other Slams.

Between Navratilova and Graf for me and very close.

Overall H2H is 9-9. That is 7-3 to Martina up to 1987, Martina before age 31, Steffi before age 19, and 6-2 to Steffi from 1988 on, Martina aged 31 or more, Steffi 19 or more.

5-4 to Martina in Slams, but 4-2 to Steffi in Slam finals. These 6 Slam finals were 6 successive of their meetings between 1987 and 1989 ( Steffi by 2-1 at Wimbledon, 1-0 at the French Open and 1-1 at the US Open ).

Overall Slam Singles titles:
Martina 18 ( 3 AO, 2 FO, 9 WIM, 4 USO )
Steffi 22 ( 4 AO, 6 FO, 7 WIM, 5 USO )

Steffi's more Slam singles titles plus getting the better of Martina in that run of Slam finsls aged 18 to 20 to Martina's 30 to 32 edges me to Steffi.

9 votes in and all have scored, Steffi though leading the way with 6 of the votes.

Needs someone to leap forwards and chase her tomorrow!

The womens is more difficult than the mens for me but a golden slam wins it for Steffi!

But not by as much as you're indicating Jon, since you've allocated one of Maria's votes to Martina there wink

Steffi 9

Martina 5

Margaret and Maria 2 each

Thanks Michael - how weird, I was sure I had seen Maria as being  behind Margaret still on 1 vote...I am sure I have seen percentages change in the  past on these polls, maybe my imagination, but either way, Steffi is in control still

Martina HAS reached 6 votes now, still edging very slowly! 19 votes in

Steffi 9

Martina 6

Margaret and Maria 2 each

All the womens polls in this event have had 21 or 22 votes, so it is just possible Martina could make up the ground, although Steffi is clearly in control here

Grand Slam Stat

Margaret Court - 24 singles titles, 19 doubles and 19 mixed doubles - overall 62 titles, with a singles win percentage of 91% - 11% higher than the next player.
Steffi Graf - 22 singles titles, 1 doubles, no mixed doubles - overall 23 titles
Martina Navratilove - 18 singles titles, 31 doubles and ten mixed doubles - 59 titles
Maria Bueno - 7 singles titles, 11 doubles and one mixed doubles - 19 titles.

For me Court as a player is head and shoulders over everyone else.

I went to the street in Albury where she was brought up on Australia - they regard it as slum housing and her house was pulled down, but another of the same type still survives - all 4 rooms and a verandah, where she would knock tennis balls against, before she got older and crept under the fence of the nearby tennis club to play, as she couldn't afford to join; her Dad was an alcoholic factory worker. It is easy to knock her for her views, but her background and story are not those of typical tennis players - like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, she emerged from poverty and hardship, and I am sad she has done so badly in this poll. It must be based on her homophobia, which although I don't support, is irrelevant to how good she was as a player.
