Andre Agassi returned to the tour in May 2017 in the position of coach to Novak Djokovic for the French Open.[71] Agassi announced the end of the partnership on March 31, 2018, stating that there were too many disagreements in the relationship.[72]
On July 24, 2006, at the start of the Countrywide Classic tournament in Los Angeles, American tennis player Andy Roddick announced his partnership with Jimmy Connors as his coach. In September, 2006 Roddick reached the final of the U.S. Open, where he lost to Roger Federer. On March 6, 2008, Roddick announced the end of that 19-month relationship.
In July 2013 former women's world No. 1 Maria Sharapova announced on her website that Connors was her new coach. On August 15, 2013 Sharapova confirmed that she had ended the partnership with Connors after just one match together.
Stefan Edberg signed a contract to become Roger Federer's coach at the end of 2013. Their collaboration officially started at the 2014 Australian Open. [1] Federer described Edberg's role as "more of a mentor than a coach";[10] nonetheless, his influence has been widely regarded as pivotal in the Swiss champion's eventual resurgence,[11][12] especially in bringing effective and more frequent serve-and-volley and net charging to his game.[13][14] Their collaboration ended in December 2015.[15]
In 2013 Goran Ivanievi began coaching compatriot Marin ili who won the 2014 US Open under his guidance.[32] He split with ili after 2016 Wimbledon.
On 8 August 2016, Tomá Berdych announced via social media that Ivanievi will begin coaching him, starting at 2016 Western & Southern Open.
As of 2019, he was coaching Milos Raonic until just before the Indian Wells Masters, when Raonic announced that he would be getting a new coach Fabrice Santoro.[33]
On 30 June 2019, Novak Djokovic confirmed that he added Ivanievi to his coaching team.[34]
In 1985, having reached the semi-finals at the French Open, John McEnroe was beaten in straight sets by Kevin Curren in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.[12][13] He reached his last Grand Slam singles final at the US Open; this time, he was beaten in straight sets by Lendl. He did not advance past the quarter-finals at the WCT Finals or the Masters Grand Prix. He did win major events at Philadelphia (his 4th straight there), Canada (2nd straight) and Stockholm (2nd straight and 4th overall) and finished the year as the number two ranked player.
By 1986, the pressures of playing at the top had become too much for McEnroe to handle, and he took a six-month break from the tour. It was during this sabbatical that on August 1, 1986, he married actress Tatum O'Neal, with whom he had already had a son, Kevin (1986). They had two more children, Sean (1987) and Emily (1991), before divorcing in 1994. When he returned to the tour later in 1986, he won three ATP tournaments, but in 1987 he failed to win a title for the first time since turning pro. He took a seven-month break from the game following the US Open, where he was suspended for two months and fined US$17,500 for misconduct and verbal abuse.
The highlight of Miloslav Meí's career came later in 1988 when he was selected to represent Czechoslovakia in the Seoul Olympics. He defeated Eric Jelen, Jeremy Bates, Guy Forget and Michiel Schapers and then in the men's singles semifinals he exacted revenge over Wimbledon champion Edberg, in a five-set match 36, 60, 16, 64, 62. He then met Tim Mayotte of the U.S. in the men's singles final and won in four sets 36, 62, 64, 62 to claim the gold medal. He also won a bronze medal in the men's doubles, partnering Milan rejber.
Newcombe and Rod Laver are the only players to ever win both the US Open and Wimbledon men's singles titles as an amateur and as a professional. The grass surfaces favoured his game, and the French Open's clay surface was the only major singles championship he never won. However, he did take the French doubles title on three occasions.
He is an Australian Living Treasure.
The Newcombe Medal, awarded yearly to the most outstanding Australian tennis player, is named in honour of his tennis achievements.[8]
He runs the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch & Tennis Academy in New Braunfels, Texas. (SEE MY COMMENTS RE HIS TEAM TOURING TO PLAY HUDDERSFIELD WHEN I WAS YOUNG!)
In 2001, he was revealed to be President George W. Bush's drinking companion on the night of 4 September 1976, when Bush was charged with driving under the influence.[9] This controversy surfaced during the 2000 US Presidential Election.
In the Queen's Birthday Honours of 1971, Ken Rosewall was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).[112] In the Australia Day Honours of 1979, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Rosewall was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1980. In 1985 he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.[113] He is an Australian Living Treasure.
The Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre's central court is the Ken Rosewall Arena, a covered arena.
