Steffi was probably my favourite - was in Charles De Gaulle airport one year when a mass of bodies came sweeping through the terminal, and her and Andre and entourage came by! Star struck!
My vote has to go to Steffi - first saw her play when she was just 15 - and she went on to reach Wimbledon R4 where she lost to Jo Durie 9-7 in the third.
O'Neil is best known for her singles victory at the 1978 Australian Open, the last Australian female to do so. She also became the first unseeded woman to win the Australian title in the open era.[2] In a relatively weak field she defeated Betsy Nagelsen in the final in straight sets.[3] This feat went unmatched until Serena Williams, unseeded and ranked World No. 81, won the 2007 Australian Open.[4] O'Neil is also one of the few players who have won both the Australian Open Junior (1973) and Senior (1978) championship titles.[2]
Marion Bartoli is the only ladies Wimbledon champion of the Open era never to have played in one of the other Grand Slam finals. But she did make 2 Wimbledon finals.

Mention of Marion Bartoli reminds one of a player who fell through the net of not being retired yet barely being active. I am referring to Sabine Lisicki who in her prime of 2013 (Wimbledon exploits excluding final performance ) was very popular.

Yes, you're right, shes currently ranked around 595. If she declared retired shed be taken out of rankings and in this field. Toyed with it...
Seeing Vera Sukova's name, has the player who beat her in the 1962 Wimbledon final been missed out? I am referring to Karen Susman, but I dare say there would not have been a rush for votes. She was in that rare group of people who won both Wimbledon(1962) and junior Wimbledon(1960). She did not defend the title in 1963 and Wimbledon was her only major singles title. However she won the Wimbledon doubles title in 1961 and 1962 with the better known Billie-Jean. She came back to Wimbledon in 1977 and played doubles with Billie-Jean.
