Shelley Walpole is interesting. Now Shelley Roxburgh, her daughter is Melissa Roxburgh who starred in Diaries of a Wimpy Kid. Shelley's dad is Brian Walpole, who was chief pilot of Concorde. I had the pleasure of hearing Brian speak once when I worked at BA many years ago. He was famous for rolling Concorde in a fly past salute to the Queen on her yacht Britannia in the Caribbean, and also landed Concorde whilst flying on fumes something for which he was suspended from his job for I recall!
Shelley herself has a winning head to head record v Steffi Graf!

It is all very tight in the womens, but Joss Rae (with Ginny Wade) is actually the player so far with most votes in the womens R2 polls
Interestingly Joss was well beaten by Annabel Croft in R1 Group 7 ( 9 to 5 out of 20 ).
Annabel currently trails Anne Keothavong ( 5 to 3 out of 18 ) in a spread out R2 Group E.
Looks like this is a relatively weak R2 group.
It is. There are probably 4-5 women in other groups that I couldn't vote for who I would have voted for ahead of the person i did vote for here. Joss is a lovely person but her record doesn't quite stack up against some of the other women in this round...

Michelle Tyler is the dark horse for me here.. I realised she was the one person who had reached the SFs across both groups who I still didn't know who she was... Have looked her up now and managed to find one old picture. Her main claim to fame seems to be that she won the French Open girls singles title in 1976.. and played doubles from time to time with Sue Barker.

Michelle Tyler had a famous win over Pam Shriver in the 1978 Wightman Cup. Britain went on to win the trophy. That was the year in which Pam had reached the US Open singles final. . In the whole of the 20th and 21st century Pam is at 16 years and 2 months the youngest person to reach a Grand Slam singles final. And she never reached another although she reached many doubles finals with Martina.

Thanks Rosamund this is really interesting to know about both Pam and Michelle! And I will remember Michelle now too

Reading about the wightman cup brings back memories. It was a massive event a la Ryder Cup, the years I watched it was always at royal Albert hall, sadly it became too one sided.
In that era over winter we also had the Wembley mens indoor , brighton for women and the world doubles which was like the current tour finals at the o2, and variously held at Olympia, royal Albert hall also and nec birmingham
