New poll events - favourite foreign ATP and WTA player

As indicated in Jon's recent favorite overall ATP and WTA player thread, I will be setting up favourite foreign player polls on a similar basis to the previous favourite polls.

Still got to decide how deep I go in the rankings and considering WCs but I hope to have the WTA round 1 polls up tomorrow ( Tuesday ) evening.

 Looking forward to it!

Hope you can do the top 128, but will be fun anyway, no matter where you make the cut off. Given the last poll, I guess Petra Kvitova starts as favourite.

Cheers. It is kind of a question of balancing liking to go deep with not too big groups ( and hence votes spread too thin ) unless I have an extra round.

Possibly 10 groups of 13 or 14. Top 3 (plus ties) in each through to 3 SFs.

Great idea - the other one I wondered about is whether you would do 16 groups of eight. like a Grand Slam, and then maybe a last 16, semi and final with a head to head. If I had limitless time and computer knowledge beyond that of a five year old, that is what I would do. Anyhow love the idea of there being lots of players involved - some of the so called lesser players are actually much more popular than the more famous ones, not just among the tennis boffins here, but with lots of other fans too.

My favourites will all go out early, but it will be fun to see if anyone else votes the same way as me.

Currrently drawing 10 WTA groups from the top 130 ranked foreign players - ie. up to WR 132 taking out Jo and Heather.

The players will be assigned randomly to the groups based on ranking bands.

5 groups will consist of foreign ranking bands : 1-5, 16-20, 21-25, 36-40, 41-45, 56-60, 61-65, 76-80, 81-85, 96-100, 101-105, 116-120 and 121-130.

The other 5 groups will come from : 6-10, 11-15, 26-30, 31-35, 46-50, 51-55, 66-70, 71-75, 86-90, 91-96, 106-110, 111-115 and 121-130.

 Sounds excellent! big job!

Presumably similar structure for ATP ( I think we have 3 players in that or does Andy creep in and make it 4, so down to ATP 133/4?

Coming folk's way shortly, 10 WTA round 1 groups, names in each group in alphabetical order.

I will declare each group in turn from one to ten from 9 pm onwards tomorrow - Wednesday. So please vote before then to be sure of counting.

Top 3 in each group and ties will advance to 3 SF groups.

The randomness of the groupings really makes this fun; and difficult!
Thanks for organising.

The WTA R1 groups will close Wednesdsy evening from 9 pm.

The ATP R1 groups will be up Wednesday evening, close Thursday evening.

The WTA SFs up Thursday evening, close Friday evening.

The ATP SFs up Friday evening, close Saturday evening.

Both finals will be up Sunday morning and close Monday night.

That's the plan anyway ...

The three SFs for each will be seeded by R1 performance to the extent that one SF will have 4 group 1sts, 2 group 2nds, and 4 group 3rds. The other two SFs will have 3 group 1sts, 4 group 2nds and 3 group 3rds. Which 1st, 2nd or 3rd slot will be decided at random, subject to trying to have players from the same R1 groups in different SFs group.

Where there are ties for 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the groups, the players allocated to the 1st etc slots in the draw will be decided at random.

Where more than 3 come through from any R1 group, the additional players will be added to groups at random.

Each SF will produce a top 4 and ties for the finals.

The great thing about this is that with no brits, I'm not actually a fan of any player, more that I have whimsical favourites that can turn day by day. I voted for Babos in one group because I've seen her live once at Ilkley. No way I'm a fan, but I look out for her results more than most others now.
