Who is your favourite British Player?!

So, here is the new poll. I figured this is the British tennis Active Board (or so it tells me when I log in) and we should be able to work out who our favourite player is.

I wanted to make it a bit of fun, so here is the way it will work.

60 British Players (all current) will be nominated - the 60 players will be made up of 30 men and 30 women. The 30 will be split 20/10 into singles and doubles players, specifically as follows:

Top 20 British Men as of latest ranking list

Top 20 British women, ditto

Top 10 British doubles players, men

Top 10 British doubles players, women

If any of the doubles players is also in the top 20 singles list, the 21st singles player will get selected and so on and so forth til we have 60 in total.

The 60 will be organised into 5 separate groups of 12, in each group will be 6 men and 6 women, with 4 singles and 2 doubles for each.

I will put up a poll (5 polls in fact) and voting will be cast. The top 4 in each group (20 players) will go through to  the semifinals. In the semifinals there will be 2 groups of 10. From those 2 semis, the top 4 in each semi will go through to the final group (8 players in total) and the winner of the final will be the Boards favourite player.

If players are tied for top 4 , all will go through, unless they get zero votes and are tied in which case they will go out!

The first round will take 2 days ( I am going to post them tonight and close them Monday around 10 pm).

the semis will be posted Tuesday and last til Thursday. And the final will last Friday through Sunday.

Remember, vote for your favourite in each group. The groups have been organised to keep men and women equal and singles and doubles to the correct ratio , and I have also allocated them in a seeded fashion, so hopefully  they will be reasonably fair.

And if you vote, please do let other folks know who you have voted for , I am keen for people to discuss and enter into the fun of it!!

5 polls coming up shortly!!!

Have fun!

Draw for this was done pretty randomly trying to get the top ranked players into different groups and top ranked men, separate from women and top ranked singles from doubles.

I think the groups become quite even, but ranking doesnt of course directly influence who your favourite is.

It is the Andy Murray Message Board, so Andy will be favourite, but could be an interesting week!

As it stands, we have 26 players in position or ties to move into semifinals across the 5 groups. Let's get voting and make sure your favourites secure their places. 31 players dont have a single vote yet!

I'll post a state of play in each group later this evening. Remember it closes around 10 pm tomorrow.

So, remember, all of these votes will be counted around 10pm tonight.

The top 4 plus ties will go through.

Semifinal groups will be seeded so group a winner and group b winner are kept separate and an even distribution down the groups. Men and women players obviously wont proceed in equal numbers from first groups, so I wont try to keep those even in the next stage.

Weve had around 19 votes per group, so a few more could make a difference, particularly if your personal favourite needs some support. It will also make the whole process more authentic!

Updated schedule:

Round 1 Polls will close around 5 pm Monday

Semifinal groups will be posted Monday night and close around 5 pm Wednesday

FINAL group will be posted Wednesday night and close around 5 pm Friday.

Original plan was dragging it on too much and number of votes cast suggests those who wish to vote are voting largely in the first 24 hours, so I dont need to have the timescales allowed initially!

As it looks like a lot more than 20 players will go through (24-27 trending at the moment), I am going to turn the semifinals into 3 groups instead of two. Wont change who gets through but will change the semifinals and make them more interesting. Folks will have more voting options and less awkward personal compromises at the semifinal stage!

I will then have best 3 of the semifinalists in each group plus ties to go through, so probably end up with 9 to 12 finalists in a few days time.

So the first round is closed and 25 folks voted in each group which was great .

25 players have managed to qualify for the semis and 35 players leave the event.

As mentioned above, 25 players is a little too large for two semis so I will divide them into 3 groups of 8 and 9; 3 players from each will therefore make the final.

Groups will be decided based on group winners being seeded top, then 2nd placed players etc. with seedings based on votes received in round 1 and also ranking position in their respective groups. So this will mix them around a bit and hopefully make for some very interesting groups!!

Semifinal groups to be posted later this evening.

Interesting that there are 15 women qualifiers and only 10 men. Also noteworthy that only one vote was sufficient to qualify in Gp A whilst two votes was not enough in Gp C.

I know, great stuff for stattos!

For semifinals, the 15 women are all split 5 per each of the 3 groups, the men are 3/3/4 respectively so they are all quite even.

In terms of the split from the previous round groups, I am also making sure that no more than 2 players from any given first round group appear in the same group again - I cant avoid it entirely clearly, we have 5 original groups, 25 qualifiers and 3 new groups, but it would have been a lot worse with only 2 semifinal groups.

I can see the way the SF groups pan out and it looks like there should be some furrowing of brows, scratching of heads and cursing at me, but I think you will find them all very fair!

In terms of first round votes order was:

Dan
Jo
Andy
Heather and Harriet
Emily W-S
Kyle, Jack, Emma R, Sam M-S

as the top 10 - but of course, when they are rearranged and start to face each other, this will change dramatically I am sure!

I also expect players will need at least 4 votes to progress to the final, maybe more so the heat is on!

So, it is looking like 4 votes approx will be the cut off but at the moment, players with 3 votes are placed to reach the final in 2 of the groups. From the top players voted for in round one, Jack D and Sam M-S are looking most in danger of not making it through to the final!

With a touch over 2 hours left, we are heading towards a 12 player final as 4 in each group are positioned to get through!

Each group could change a lot with one or two votes in any direction!

So, 13 make the final, and it will be a straight fight for the win!

the 13 in terms of who got most votes in the semis are:

Andy Murray 11
Dan Evans 11
Heather Watson 6
Emily Webley-Smith 6
Jamie Murray 6
Harriet Dart 5
Jo Konta 5
Sam Murray-Sharan 5
Emma Raducanu 4
Joe Salisbury 4
Amanda Carreras 3
Beth Grey 3
Kyle Edmund 3

To note, the 13 have 5 men and 8 women in it, and two of our mens doubles players make it through.

In the final, I will post the poll in alphabetical surname order , it will be a longish list and all can make it to win!

Poll for final will be posted tonight, will close 5 pm Friday evening!!

PS - Indy, would you do me the favour of locking down the polls as you did last time please?

I notice in round 1 we eventually got 26 or 27 votes per group and ditto for the semis, so expect to see something like that in the final, which should make it interesting. I suspect anyone reaching double figures will win it as the vote will no doubt fragment.
