Champion of Champions - Mens Event Match One - Roger Federer versus Bill Tilden - GRASS COURT

The mens opening match has been selected and is on GRASS.

Federer is perhaps the greatest man player of all time - perhaps but others will argue with that! Federer has won 20 slams, 8 of which were on grass.

But facing him is Bill Tilden. Tilden won 10 slams and 4 Pro slam titles in his career and of the 10 slams, all were won on grass. So arguably a better grass player than Federer?

And Bill will have the home crowd behind him!

Best of 5 sets.

Voting will close around 6 pm tomorrow evening, Monday.

Grass in itself very good for Tilden, those rather unfamiliar hard courts might have been an issue. The pity for him is it's against Federer.

Federer may or may not be the greatest male player of all time but his grass credentials are very clear.

Very good grass court match.

Definitely, if this was wimbledon, what a match I'd pay to see this.

Bill had a rocket serve and with home support, remember this is all being played in the USA, no flight restrictions, then it could be a cracker.

Bill of course had many problems in his life, a sad story and sad end, his biography is a great read.

Well, quarter of the way in and this one is proving a classic! Let's see how it unfolds tomorrow! Big Bill is putting up one heck of a fight!

We are all familiar with roger Federer. Bill Tilden , as well as his 10 slams, won Pro Tour slams on clay and indoor, as well as the World Hard Championships on clay at Roland Garros, a forerunner to the french open.

He sadly was jailed for 12 months on ethics charges in an era when homosexuality was illegal, questions remain on the charges though as he was jailed for underage sex and it isn't clear if the offences where actual or not. After leaving prison, he couldnt make a living due to probation restrictions, and was penniless. He died aged 60 of heart failure. He could have been one of the top few of all time, in the modern era , and also lived a happier life.

So 9 votes in, in second half of this match up and plenty of time left for a turnaround.

So, this match is over and Federer wins by 9 votes to 4, and onto a semi versus Sampras or Emerson.

Looks as if it would have to be on clay, since their respective QF matches were on grass and hard.

That could still be very interesting, each playing on their least favourite surface.

You have been following Indy! Full marks - given the match 3 surfaces you can probably now work out all the future surfaces, but dont spill the beans to anyone else who isnt up with the go!
