Champion of Champions - Womens Event Match One - Margaret Court versus Monica Seles - HARDCOURT

Opening match of the event and the match is an intriguing one.

The court draw has made this a HARDCOURT match up.

Possibly the greatest player of all time, Margaret Court of Australia, playing Monica Seles, former Yugoslavian, US Citizen and also Hungarian citizen as well.

Court won 24 slams, at all 4 events, the last in 1973. All of them on grass or clay.

Seles won 9 slams, 6 of those on hardcourt, the last in 1996. Would she have won more if she  hadnt suffered the stabbing in 1993? And  she  will have the US fans behind her.

Who will win?

Voting closes around 6 pm Monday!

This really could be an epic and it feels like one where an upset just could be on the cards. Top seed in trouble opening match ? Wow!

One of the tennis stories of all time unfolding here, amazing. Maybe tomorrow and the last 3/4s of the match will turn this around. Great match up!

I wondered, has anyone on this forum ever seen Margaret Court play? She was just before my time. What was her game like? I know many of us will have seen Seles and many think she could have been an all time great, if she wasnt anyway. That terrible stabbing on court caused her career to falter although she did win subsequent slams. A player in enjoyed watching for sure.

So 10 votes in, in second half of this match up and plenty of time left for a turnaround.

I can remember watching Margaret Court playing (on the TV) as I was growing up. I remember her having an elegant traditional serve-volley game that most players had them. Can't remember many specifics - except she was tall and had a long wingspan!

I always imagined she was a heavy hitter, typical flat style though, - I can recall reading of matches with Billy Jean King and Chris Evert, both involved in this fantasy event! Maybe she will get to play them later on!

Have to confess on this one, my decision wasn't necessarily made on tennis grounds. I know this is supposed to be a bit of "tennis" fun, but personally I couldn't bring myself to vote for Margaret Court if she was playing against herself. Sorry JonH.

Hey, you can vote for whomever you like Bob and for whatever reason - that is why it is fun and not to find the best player ever etc etc.

Lets see who wins the match in an hour or so!

So, the match is over and we have a seeding upset straight up, as Monical Seles wins 9 votes to 5!

Seles into semi, plays winner of Wills Moody and Navratilova
