RE: Week 9 - ITF (W25) Potchefstroom, South Africa Hard

I also agree with Harry in that these last couple of weeks have been the best for GB womens tennis for quite some time. Before that it was mainly just Hev and Harriet, whereas now a fair few others have really stepped up and have started to get things going.

Hard to believe that Katie B only got 15 points for her 2 wins, including a fine one over a circa top 50 player, which is less than reaching a weak W25 SF, but if she can stay fit, and continue to play like that, then her ranking should surely head back to a more realistic number in due course.

Yes I agree I was surprised too Ace, but it was because her first round was only a R48 match - and this is a big reason why I use R48, R32 etc and not R1, R2, since for an event like the 125k, the distinction is really important! So Katie got 15 pts for winning her R48 and R32 matches and reaching the L16. If she had reached the QF she would have got 29 pts.

Yeah, it's good that they have the event so players can get matches in, and get used to the environment before the main event starts the week after, because most of these will be playing qualies, and some, like Blinkova, will be in the main draw directly, but I guess in reality, the event was way too strong for the points on offer.

A potential route like e.g.:

R1: (WC) Baptiste

R2: (6) Blinkova

Could quite easily have been WTA Washington, or that new US international the week before the USO, where you would have received 60 points for 2 wins, or at a push it could have been the San Jose Premier if Blinkova had been the 8th seed, or beaten a seed in R1, then that would have been 100 points, but it is what it is I guess. Just seems really stingy when the likes of (just as an example) Fran recently got 18 points in India without beating a top 500 player, or even Katie herself for beating Perrin, Lily M, and Desperier in that French W25 the other week.

Hopefully she can take this form into next week as 2 wins there, or ideally 3, and the points (and prize money) will be a lot more noticeable, but that was still a fantastic win all the same.

In the first set Sam was winning only 50+% of her 1st and 2nd serves, and got no BPs. In the 2nd set she has had two breaks and so now leads *4-2 BUT she is still winning only 50+% of her serves, and if she can't increase this percentage will keep being broken back too.

Sam has one more hold though so within a game of making it 1 set all 5-2*

Well, not yet. She was 2-0 and 40-15 up, but then lost 4 pts in a row so it is back on serve final set 2-1*

But there is another MTO now. Could be either player.

There are four breaks in a row now, neither player can get a hold in this final set 3-2*

Two holds now for a change, Sam still has the 1 serve hold advantage  4-3*

But Sam gets another crucial break now. Melnikova had GP but Sam won 3 pts in a row and now will serve for the match *5-3

.... and Sam doesn't win a single point on her serve 5-4*

I wasn't expecting her to hold that no
