Very strong field this, highlighted by Clara being fairly well down the Q seeds pecking order. 3 top 100 players, and the 8th seed is 116 - I've seen WTA international fields with lower ranked seeds than that. Almost feels tight just being 60K.
Actually, some may not be there, e.g. the top seed Nina Stojanovic was losing a doubles match at the AO today, so she'll likely give it a miss / have been automatically withdrawn, but still an event to keep an eye on, even if British interest ends after day 1.
Yes, there will be a few missing. Emily was only 15th alt on the final acceptance list, but has made it into qualifying. Some of the french girls lower down have QWC's, but not quite enough to let Beth in.
And there may be doubles to follow ........... (Em/Sofia and Beth/? - have to wait and see)
L16:- Sofia Shapatava (GEO) / Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) CR298 (150+148) [3] v Jaqueline Adina Cristian (ROU) / Elena Gabriela Ruse (ROU) CR331 (207+124)
L16: Tayisiya Morderger (GER) / Yana Morderger (GER) CR484 (245+239) v Sarah Beth Grey (GBR) / Conny Perrin (SUI) CR416 (168+248)
The winners meet in the quarter finals. Top two seeds have byes.
15 points for the win, 29 points for winning the QF. Not sure what their lowest counters are right now, as I used to refer to Coric
Em's lowest counter is 28 so she needs to reach the final ( W 80, RU 48 ) to make any real ranking points total headway. And she has nothing due off until April. Beth's lowest counter is 10.
I've been told that the courts there are very fast, it's cold, and the Artengo balls they are using are fast as well. Clara hit a lot of winners in her match (as did Sofia). Should be interesting when the main draw starts !
The Romanians reached a WTA final together last season and were the highest ranked non-seeds. The girls were broken from 40-15 to lose a tight opening set, then again to go a break down in the second. Close out those games and it might have been different.
Not the best start to the season but not a surprise to drop this one I don't think. They have two big 100ks in the States next.
