 Katie posted on twitter yesterday

"2019 was very tough for me. I had an incredible experience playing in the Fed Cup for Great Britain which unfortunately led to a season ending injury. Ive been advised that playing on clay so early in the season may aggravate the back injury I suffered last year. Im gutted not to be playing for my country but I cant take the risk of further injury this year as I want to come back stronger. I wish Anne and the team all the success for the tie."

Not sure what the reason for this is but it would have looked bad if Katie had turned up to play in a tournament in Slovakia if at the same time she could have been representing her country.

In all the circumstances I think most folk would have given her a pass on that.

Yes. Especially as her key claim was that her coaches did not want her playing on clay so early in the season (so no reason not to play on hard).

If the tabloid press had got hold of it, you think they'd have given her a pass, playing for herself rather than her country? And I doubt they would have spent much time explaining the circumstances...

I wish I didn't have to doubt people's goodwill so much these days, but sadly it's hard not to.

Sam is still playing I see. I'd love to see her do well.

You think the tabloid press would even have cared about the Fed Cup?

Maybe not but Katie got some bad press when she took the money at the French championships when she had no intention of playing. Similarly when Jo Konta mentioned about maybe getting a wild card for St Petersburg it looks bad if she did skip the Fed Cup and then played St Petersburg.

Yes, good point, you may well be right, Rosamund, maybe she was just trying to be cautious (overly cautious?) and avoid any potential criticism.

In fact, hope it's that and not something more serious.

Yes CD and that's really what I meant, as Rosamund has noted... Coz I agree with u that I don't think the tabloid press care about the Fed Cup, but the fact that katie was playing in another tournament in the same country instead of playing in the Fed Cup, is exactly the sort of thing that would suddenly make them take some notice of the Fed Cup.. Sadly I don't think it's possible to be too cynical about some of the behaviours of the Murdoch tabloids especially.

Dan is still in the list of players on the Monpellier tournament website.  https://www.opensuddefrance.com/fr/joueurs/

He has had time enough to recover.  It isn't a particularly strong draw, hopefully he can win some matches.
