Week 3 - ITF (W25) - Vero Beach FL, USA - Clay

So Argentina's #1 and #2 prove too good for our soon to be #9 and #10.

I was a bit surprised to see that these two are the only two Argentinian women in the top 400.

Ormaechea played Fed Cup for Argentina against GB in 2013. She beat Jo in Jo's Fed Cup singles debut and then Laura later on. Obviously Argentina are still looking for a successor to  Gabriela Sabatini

Yes, the two Argentines had history with GB, Ormaechaea, as ROSAMUND, notes was our bete noire in that awful capitulation in Fed Cup, whilst Podoroska was the player that missed out on her earned place in US Open qualifying after a WC was given to the considerably lower ranked Laura Robson predicated on her having won the recent Landisviille $25K.

Back in their junior days there  was a tournament at Santa Croce Italy in May 2008 when Laura beat Ormaechea on route  to the final. She didn't seem to have any problems then but it was in a less intimating environment than the Fed Cup. She lost in the final to Johanna Konta In the days when Jo was in a sort of no mans land over which country she was representing. However even in those days a junior final between 2 British players was a rare occurence.   After  the Fed Cup play off with Argentina it was another 4 years until we got into the play off situation again . When we did win the play off in 2019 the competition was changed so the team we beat in the playoffs  Kazakhstan are at the same level as us anyway. But never mind Billie Jean is excited about  the new competition.
