Week 2 - ITF (W25) - Daytona Beach FL, USA - Clay

Nice to see Mandy starting the year with some ambition. A good opportunity to start it off with a win too.

R32: Amanda CARRERAS (GBR) 352 vs QUALIFIER

Even 1 win would be great as her lowest counter is a 1. Here's hoping that she's fit and can carry on the good work smile

Yes and whoever does better this week between Fran and Mandy will succeed Katy Dunne in the GB top 10. Which begs the question why more of us, including myself, don't have both of them in our top 10 predictions for the year...

Probably because most of us went for Emma Radacanu and Amanda limits herself to Clay pretty much.

The fact that one will be no. 10 in a week (mid Jan 2020) doesn't really mean they're a slamdunk for end Dec 2020 smile

Well Katy is down to play next week, and judging by the video clip from Halton is fighting fit and ready to go, so with only a couple of points to cover over the next two months, I expect she'll stay in contention for the #10 spot

Amanda isnt defending any WTA points until April/May, so may well be high enough ranked by then to be getting direct acceptance into any/all European clay season 25ks.

Yes, we're talking about an almost totally different ranking year regarding current rankings vs our prediction rankings.

Though of course there are good reasons to think that either or both can at least repeat and indeed perhaps do better.

For me, it came down to one of the two for my #10 and I felt Mandy was the safer bet.

Actually even in the very short term, with both Mandy and Fran dropping a few points on 03/02, they each need at least one win to overtake #10 Katy D when this week's 25K points add in.

Yes, I think many of us dithered for some time. There are quite a large bunch to choose from.

Someone like Naomi Broady could well be in the top 10 and yet I think hardly anyone went for her. Fran and Mandy are obvious candidates. But so are lots of others.

The great thing is we'd all like to see all of them do well !

Interestingly Fran has only been picked by 6 people, but appears to have been the #11 pick of many, since it was she that sparked the debate about having an 11th sub or wild card pick. Of those around them, Maia, currently #9 has only 7 picks with Katy D 10 and Mandy 11. Yes, of those outside the top 10, Emma has by far the highest number of picks (37), but essentially people are mostly betting on both Maia and Katy D not to be in the top 10 at the end of the year. So that means two replacements... Perhaps a little surprisingly the favourite to re-enter the top 10 along with Emma is neither Fran nor Mandy but Gabi with 18 picks.. a lot of people remembering her good 2018 rather than her rather awful 2019.

No of Average Average
GB WR Picks GB pred WR pred
Maia Lumsden 9 327 7 9.3 287
Katy Dunne 10 350 10 9.1 271
Francesca Jones 11 352 6 9.8 259
Amanda Carreras 12 353 11 9.5 277
Emma Raducanu 13 374 37 7.8 230
Gabriella Taylor 14 420 18 8.8 257

Knew Mandy had a qualifier. She has a few 1 pointers that could do with removing. But not entered in the doubles cry Perhaps doesen't feel fully fit yet -they must have been queing up.

Out of interest where are you finding the scores? It seems odd that Daytona Beach isn't on the usual ITF live scores page.

Yes they have no data for some reason this week - so one can only see by refreshing the OOP or MD page to get the results of the matches, no scores available during the matches.
