Week 46- ITF (W25) - Hua Hin, Thailand - Hard

Katie having another go this week. She didn't win a match last week, but she has a qualifier first up this week, so let's hope for a little more from her.

R32: Katie BOULTER (GBR) 351 vs QUALIFIER

She did FW - Joanna Garland! Perhaps a rather banana skin match to start with. Joanna is not playing this week. Joanna also beat the 5th seed in her next match, then lost to Lesley Kerkhove in the next round, who won the tournament. I see Lesley, how is Dutch has added a second Thai surname to her name, so assume she married and could be living in Thailand too now.

Her husband is a Dutch footballer, son of another Dutch footballer. The surname could be of Indonesian origin as that was a Dutch colony till after WW2.

to add, according to Wiki she and the football player only married in July 2019, so presumably she has only just changed her name to take his as well.

Ah yes, thanks for the updates and corrections both of you, very interesting... and yes brendan I've just checked and Pattinama is an Indonesian surname, and to be more specific, a Moluccan surname, the Maluku Islands or Moluccas being a scattered archipelago in eastern Indonesia (the Spice islands)...

Hmm Katie has just lost a very tight first set 6-7(8) Ueda served for the first set at 4-5* but then Katie broke back... In the TB Katie had 1 SP at 6-5, but after then the SPs were Uedas.

Second set is on serve 2-2*

Second set was even until 3-3, when Katie broke and then served her way home... So one set each now 6-7(8) 6-4

All to play for in the third...

Wow, a wonderful third set for Katie, first signs she's starting to hit her straps again - even if she did serve a DF on her first match point, and then let her 40-0 lead slip to deuce. But she won that last set 25pts to 10. And finally her first win since her return!

6th seed up next for Katie, and a significantly larger test for her.

R32: Katie BOULTER (GBR) 351 def Ramu UEDA (JPN) [Q] 622 (CH:527) 6-7(8) 6-4 6-0

R16: Katie BOULTER (GBR) 351 vs Fang Ying XUN (CHN) [6] 224 (CH:183 July 19)

Katie always seems to start slowly, she was getting better before her injury but as she gets back into stronger tournaments she is going to have to stop giving her opponents a headstart

Start building up those hours & miles back on court again, in the heat of battle; grooving and honing the game back in to shape; gaining confidence in the healed back.

Patience may ve the biggest obstacle, in the short term.

Wish her all the best - she paid a heavy price for sterling service to country.

Yes, I think you're right with all these points SQ, and I also agree I suspect the patience one may be the biggest immediate challenge. I must admit I thought Katie would be more competitive today but yes, this is just her third match back now and WR 224 is not a bad standard, this is quite a tough W25 line up.

Hope Katie takes encouragement and just joy from being back on the court again.
