This tournament is being shown on prime (the other is not).

Hsieh Cheng-Peng is Hsieh Su-Wei's ("Funky Su") brother.

Interesting to see dom back with krajicek. They seemed to do well before seemingly splitting for us swing.

Not sure what to expect from the Brits. Surface will be quicker than weve seen in usa.

Kyle and Dan together may be a nod to a possible davis cup option?

In singles, I'd like to see them both win first round at least

I think Kyle might have it difficult. Dan should win.

For the record:

L28:  Cristian Garín (CHI) WR 34 (CH = 32 in June) vs (7) Kyle Edmund WR 32 (CH = 14 last October)

There is no head-to-head.

L28:  Daniel Evans WR 47 (CH = 41 in March 2017) vs (WC) Bai Yan (CHN) WR 225 (CH = 200 in March 2016)

Again, no head-to-head.

Isner's the top seed.

We can pick a 5 man team and are so short of doubles options??  I think perhaps not.

Plus at least one will probably be playing singles and I believe the doubles is on the same day as one set of singles. Actually I forget if it's just one set of singles anyway now given it's just a week long event -  i.e. best of 3 matches?

yeah, its best of 3 matches and all 3 are played on the same day. I guess my thinking is that it is just testing options, Jamie is probably a lock, Kyle, Dan and Cam also, probably Andy, our team effectively is picked as those 5. So the doubles could be a combo with Jamie or if Andy doesnt play doubles, would Jamie be picked ? Could we play Andy and Cam singles, Kyle and Dan doubles, or Andy may choose not to play, so ...

I guess I am thinking options, If Andy chooses to play I cant see another doubles only player than Jamie getting picked, if Andy says no, then jamie and Neal would be the choice if they maintain their recent form; cant see Joe getting picked either way, sadly for him.

To my mind in a 5 man team we should be maximising our doubles chances, especially in best of 3 matches.

1) If Andy is selected with him down to or even just quite likely playing singles ( and he still has to prove himself to be in that position ) then it has to be considered that if he does play singles he surely won't also play doubles. Therefore in that event I would pick 2 doubles specialists. We don't need 4 to cover 2 singles spots and then leave ourselves with Jamie possibly paired with Kyle, Dan or Cam. I would leave one of these 3 out.

2) If Andy is not being considered for singles at the time then your suggested 5 man team stands if he is considered a better doubles option with Jamie than Neal, Joe or Dom. Now there may be a fair chance of that but remember he is now concentrating on singles and Jamie & Neal are recent Slam semi finalists together.

So, yes if Andy is not being picked as a singles option I would at least question whether he should be picked at all. And if he is a singles option then I'd pick 2 doubles specialists.

Sorry, I'd forgotten that this is the Chengdu Open thread so a kind of huge Davis Cup diversion.

I am not surprised. Garin has improved his ranking this year and is on my personal list of players to watch out for - I saw him play Cilic at Queens. Kyle on the other hand has basically just kept the same ranking but those 250 title points (from Antwerp) will be coming off next month and I don't think there is currently much to replace them?

Yes, you called this one right, flamingowings.

I haven't seen Garin recently. Still remember him winning the RG boys final (he beat Cam Norrie in R1)

It's taken him a while to really get established in adult tennis but I'm pleased he finally has.
