Week 33 - ATP Masters 1000, Western & Southern Open, Cincinnati, OH, US (Hard)

The Tennis Gods have a sense of humour....not least because Wawrinka and Dimitrov have drawn each other again but also:

L56: (9) Daniil Medvedev (RUS) WR 9 (=CH) vs Kyle Edmund WR 33 (CH 14 in '18)

L56: (WC) Andy Murray WR 325 (CH 1 in '16) vs Richard Gasquet (FRA) WR 66 (CH 7 in '07)

- Winner plays Dominic Thiem

Edit for rankings

Further edit for the spelling of "Cincinnati", which I'm tired of seeing misspelt, though usually it's with two "n's" & two "t's" at the end, & it's driving me to distraction!  wink

Andy playing gasquet is a dream draw. Gasquet is an entertainer at heart, they know each others games and Andy wont get drawn into too many long rallies. I reckon Andy will fancy his chances in this.

As per this analysis, Cinci plays as one of the faster surfaces https://www.perfect-tennis.com/tennis-court-surfaces-and-court-speeds/

Thiem wont like that. Good call for Andy to choose this location, faster courts shorter rallies. Cinci site not showing rest of draw but wouldnt surprise me if Andy gets past these two first matches

Gasquet himself isn't long coming back from injury either. Could've been much, much worse.

thank you ! I would say it is a kind draw. Lots of big and spectacular names in his way, but they are all largely players of instinct and Andy probably would find that easier right now than a tough , long drawn out match. Dont expect wonders but the draw provides opportunity for him

I reckon jamie and neal are almost at a must win stage with this match. Ken should be stretching his legs on the side.

Surprised to see andy playing singles and doubles, must be confident which is good

Yes it is very encouraging that Andy feels so good about the hip. Well he says he is pain free so continuing to play doubles he probably just sees as more useful court time and I am sure he is taking good advice.

While poised to add one more men's doubles in the GB top 100 thead it is of course the singles we await with great interest.

Really hope to see good court coverage and an encouraging initial standard. Gasquet is indeed a good draw but I am not particularly expecting a win first singles back. If Andy does win then I would be hugely surprised if he beat Thiem even on a pretty fast hard court. I do like nice surprises though.
