Week 30 - ITF (W80) - Granby, Canada - Hard

OER led me to realise the MD for here had already been made. Em has was a high alt and has got in directly, but might have been better off getting the points for 1 or 2 q wins, as she's now drawn the top seed

R32: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) 510 vs Nao HIBINO (JPN) [1] 135 (CH:56 Jan 16)

Doubles draw yet to come.

Week 30 - ITF (W80) Granby, Canada - Hard

This was such a mess. For some reason they made the main draw before the qualifying sign-in closed, and listed 3 lucky loser spots, before realising they had to move up the 3 'next in' players instead. Those 3 players were then added in.

After that, 2 of the 5-8 seeds pulled out, so they had to move another 2 players up (of whom Em was the last) and include a 9th and 10th seed.

And that is why you do the main draw after qualies is underway!

Anyway, terrible draw, and unfortunate as she could have done with the 5 points she missed out on last week after picking up a niggle in her match in Kazakhstan. Anyway, we await to see who she plays with in doubles.

Yes indeed. Emily is also one of those who will lose out a bit once the transition points are added back in, as she will fall about 55 places. In fact Emily Appleton will go ahead of her, which certainly seems wrong, so yes it would be good if this Em could pick up a few more points the next couple of points to regain her position.

I guess the rankings will be what they will be and I just hope they are now left to settle again in the new/old format.

As folk have pointed out some players who have been foresaking 15Ks for 25Ks and above ( and not had that much success there ) because the 15Ks were not counting to WTA rankings will initially lose out a bit. Though in Em's case I doubt 15Ks would ever have been on her agenda much if at all anyway, since she has her doubles interests too.

I certainly get the impression that most here are happy to see 15Ks ( plus 15Ks and 25Ks for the men ) now counting again for the WTA and ATP rankings with just some discussion re the timing. But counting 25Ks and above only and then reverting back again was quite revealing regarding these who relatively struggled at 25K+ ( would be even more revealing if MD R1 losers didn't get points ).

So Emily is playing with Sachia Vickery this week in the doubles. Not a bad choice of partner, Sachia and Madison Brengle beat Katie S + to win the W60 doubles final last week in Berkeley.

R16: Sachia Vickery/ Emily Webley-Smith (USA/GBR) [3] 460 (275+185) vs Mai Hontama/ Minori Yonehara (JPN/JPN) 750 (520+230)

If they used Monday's rankings they would be seeded 2. Not sure why they haven't to be honest as draw was made today.

Their opponents are, again, the highest ranked unseeded players.

It is standard practice to use the previous Monday's rankings for singles and doubles seeding no matter when the draw is made ( I would imagine actually in rules somewhere so that things are clear ).

The only exceptions that I am aware of are the Indian Wells and Miami mandatories with their late in the week starts ( and actually that may just be the ATP side, I'm not sure re the WTA ).

Yes, it's in the ITF Rulebook

Singles: $25,000 to $100,000 Tournaments
In singles, seeding shall be based on the following order of priority:
A. Players with a WTA Singles Ranking from Monday seven (7) days
before the Tournament Week.
B. If seed positions remain available, players with an ITF World Tennis
Singles Ranking from Monday seven (7) days before the Tournament
Week

Think that must just be on the ATP side for Miami Indi because IW champ Bianca Andreescu would have been seeded for Miami and therefore receive a bye, but instead had to play an extra round (and has since played only 1 extra tournament...)

Bianca was injured during IW regardless of if she played the "extra" Miami round or not - the bye wouldn't have changed anything.

The WTA rules for seeding are the same as for the ITF - ranking in the week preceeding the tournament

Probably not, but she managed to win the 3 matches in Miami including a very long R1 3 setter with Begu which wouldn't have helped, so some thought an extra round off might have had a bit of an impact. Either way, the main point was the new rankings weren't in effect.

I suppose if nothing else, it would have given her an extra day or two to decide if she was able to play and perhaps discuss with her parents, who I recall had specifically made the trip to watch her there.

She turned up at FO, won at least a round and then withdrew I think (with the same injury). I think it would not have changed a thing as it was still an issue (& is still an issue?) all these months later. The real damage was already done during IW.

One thing about Em's play, she doesn't die wondering.. Comes into the net a lot (like a good doubles player), and even tried serve and volleying one point I watched. Shots are often too deep though allowing Hibino to pass her several times. However, she is not likely to hold serve either through passive play, so is interesting to watch her tactics. Hibino, even if troubled a bit by her ball toss and an iffy first serve nevertheless has the first set easily enough 6-2. Emily missing too many opportunities when she does have a chance, indicated by the volley she dumped into the net instead of taking the score to deuce on set point.
