Fran Jones

I was looking to copy Grachka's post in the Wimbledon Wild Cards thread on Fran Jones to her individual thread when I realised she hasn't had a thread opened yet. It's a really great thread, and since I hope there will be plenty more news on Fran's progress in the coming weeks/ years, I'm opening one for her now. It's a wonderful article on what she has to overcome with her EEC and her determination to continue to do so.

A very nice segment on Sky News this morning about Fran Jones's rise against the odds.

A write up and highlights here: news.sky.com/story/wimbledon-wildcard-with-genetic-disorder-has-no-limits-11747189

Anne-Marie Batson chat with Fran during lockdown - sounds fit and raring to go, and starting to hit again at the NTC

Having followed Fran on this forum & seen her play on a couple of occasions it is a fantastic tribute to her that I consider her just an extremely talented young tennis player with a decent chance of breaking into the top 100.

In terms of attitude she reminds me a bit of Harriet if not more focused with a weight of shot up there with the likes of Freya, a promising combination. The fact that as a junior she has not really been able to lift weights is pretty exciting in terms of further development. I think continuing to follow Frans development over the next 3-4 years assuming she stays fit will be an amazing ride & great privilege.

Fran up to WTA 256, with +21, thanks to her great run last week.

That also makes her GB's No. 6

And only just turned 20.

(NB do hope she's not injured, having had to retire last week).

CD, she withdrew from w/c 28/09 before she was injured, so probably planned to take a break after all those matches. But hopefully, it was only a minor injury or strain, and she'll be back before long.

Nice article about Franin the Times today.

I dont know whether anyone else can provide a link to it. I cant seem to be able to share it from my iPad. I guess it might not work in any case as it might well be behind a firewall but thought I would post this in case anybody has better technical skills than me!

I don't know if it is behind the paywall, but here is the link

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/i-have-to-look-after-myself-more-than-other-players-my-feet-and-hands-work-differently-bcpkg7phc

Quite a long article, but here is one paragraph of interest

"She is speaking from the National Tennis Centre, in Roehampton, southwest London, before flying back to Spain tomorrow and is waiting to find out when she can travel to Melbourne with Andreu Guilera, her coach, for the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open boosted by an incredible performance at the W25 Istanbul tournament last month."

An inspiring story of perseverance and determination. I'll be searching high and low for somewhere to watch or follow her match on Sunday! Go Fran!

Fran is probably my favourite female Brit, as a Yorkshire lass she scores highly. She was almost our player of the season on this board , would be great to see her really move forwards this next season!

What a great story, I had no idea of her condition but for mental attitude alone she'll certainly become a favourite of mine from now

As mentioned before, in the threads about Fran's condition, I've sat next to Fran.

And I say this not at all in a personal, invasive sort of way but purely from out of tennis interest (and in sheer admiration):

Fran's hands are VERY different from your average hand - the press keep mentioning the three fingers part but that gives the impression it's like a regular hand with one finger missing. Whereas her hand is actually the width of three fingers and rather a different shape. The fact that she manages to grip a racket properly is amazing (she says that she has to grip it overly tightly because she simply has less surface area of grip - and that's what puts such strain on her wrists etc).

So, yes, all the very best to her - I wish her every success.

Fran is playing in the Yarra Classic and gets Podoroska (sf in Paris on clay) in the 1st round.
