Having been annoyed at a lot of players who'd been given a place in GS main draws for a ranking achieved years earlier I'm interested in what others think about this.
It does seem very harsh, but since she hasn't played any WTA or ITF matches since October 2017 I'm surprised she went ahead and played. Didn't pull out after the draw was made either to collect half the money - perhaps she wasn't able to convince the on-site doctor.
I generally like the PR system as much as I understand it all. So no real problem with keeping these rankings but also fair enough to land on someone like a ton of bricks if they appear totally inadequate to perform on court, especially in a Slam.
It may be a judgement call, some may think it very tough, but it seems to me entirely reasonable to be there as a sanction.
I think all the slams should keep this as a rule to ensure players don't abuse the system to claim a considerable sum when their level is well below what should be expected of someone in the MD. I also think that they should have to play at least one tour match before they are given a MD place as a test of their worth.
Anna Tatishvili has appealed her severe fine from the French Open, doing so today, the day of the deadline, with a robust *40-page* appeal document (not including various exhibits and statements which are also attached).
