Southgate needed to bring on someone like Gallagher around the 80th minute mark, because at that point England were sitting back and looking like they'd collectively settled for hanging on for extra time, and the midfield was out of shape and required fresh legs. Declan Rice was basically left to fend for himself towards the end there, and the pressure from Spain eventually took its toll.

Basically Southgate is ( generally belatedly ) reactive rather than proactive. To my mind he has got lucky with some of his belated substitutions in the last few matches which has amusingly turned some pundits into almost suggesting he is a new tactical messiah, and some sort of hero for daring to substitute a struggling Kane - he so isn't. Nice chap, done an awful lot for the atmosphere around the England camp over recent years, but ...

I think everyone could see Kane needed subbing he looked shattered from the 10th minute.

I was calling for it midway through the 1st half. I think there must be an injury in there somewhere because he was so far below his level from the rest of this season, it couldn't be just tiredness.

Has everyone forgotten the heady glory days of Kevin Keegan?

Keegan, by his own admission, was not a good coach, just a good motivator.

It's strange, i never felt nervy in this match; I always felt we would lose after it started, it was so obvious Spain are a better team and it always felt inevitable. When they scored the winner, it just felt empty as opposed to upset.

Sadly we got what we deserved in the end. Kane was awful and didn't look fit. Having gone behind, we decided to go for it. Brought on more pace up front. Suddenly we looked dangerous and we equalised. But having done that, we sat back again and paid the penalty. We should have just gone for it.

Enhorabuena España.

That's what we've been like the whole tournament. Always waiting until we go behind to push forward/make subs. I know all the players say it's not Southgate that tells them to sit back but I think it's a reflection of him and his safety-first personality that infects the players. This is doubled down by having Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as coach - he was a very negative type of manager when he managed QPR. Also Southgate persisted with players who weren't performing way beyond the time when we needed fresh legs.

Looking at the structure of how we played it seemed that we played like a group of very talented individuals rather than a coherent team who all knew their roles and where they needed to be on the pitch. Looking at the clearly well-coached and structured Spanish team was like night and day.

Enhorabuena Espana indeed they definitely deserved the win and have looked by far the best team throughout the tournament. Having said that I don't think the traditional better teams - Netherlands, France, Belgium, Italy, Portugal have looked as good as I remember from past tournaments. There seemed like a real drop in quality from the past - unless I have rose-tinted glasses. Maybe it's the level they are all playing in their clubs and the amount of football and they're all knackered!

Yes, while I wanted England to win, in all honesty it would have felt like a smash and grab job against the strongest team.

 Yes, I agree.

Gareth has resigned! I think two things to do... be happy find a manager who can get more out of these players. And to thank Gareth for getting us as far as he can and doing a good job getting us to places no one else did.

 That's a very fair summary.

Agreed. I like Gareth - hes around town where I live a fair amount, seen him a number of restaurants over time. Once with his family, a couple of times with a Book Club hes part of , about 12 guys a similar sort of age - book seems a euphemism for dinner and chat and a few drinks, all v middle class type stuff.

I hope he gets a next job with less stress and that he does equally well in because I think hes done well at England and someone else will benefit a lot from him being around - if they want culture change, hed be the man. Man Utd would have been a fit IMO.

anyway, good luck to him.

Looking forward to the post Southgate era, obviously the thing that ruined him was his anti-Villa bias.

Told Hrealish to move to City and never picked him!

Hopefully when Potter (Villa fan) takes over we can bin the Bluenose (much though it pains me to say Bellingham is a wonderful player but already looks a bit tight needs to start doing yoga pronto as he has at least 4 world cups in him) and he will be able to unleash a much more direct forward line with Watkins giving us length, Rogers playing 10 6ft 3 & built like an inside centre but with great touch & technical ability and Ramsay driving in from the left. Finally the bad old McQuire days and over & we can use Konsa to clean up at the back or man mark any threat.

Not been much football talk this season! I actually havent been to a match or even watched a match since the Euros. Going to Harrogate this Saturday, playing Bradford City at home.

Been a poor start to our season, 20th at the moment, got thrashed in the EFL Cup by Preston; managed to beat the might of Liverpool U21 team in the EFL Trophy tonight, albeit on pens.

Feels like it will be a very long season - no doubt we will survive as it looks like there are two teams who are very poor and much poorer than us. But they charge £25 now for a sitting ticket and if it doesn't get better, they are unlikely to get much of my custom this season, sadly.

£25 for a seat in league 2 is quite expensive, although to be fair Chester and S****horpe charge £21 and £20 for National League North.
The cheapest ticket I paid was at Maghull - £4 for NWCL Div 1 N League match. Great value for money and a decent set up.

I know it is a lot - my Dad is 84 so got a senior discount , tha was still £20. And with my son coming as well - he came up from London - it adds up, with a pint before the match.

still , we beat Bradford 2-1, played really well for half an hour, let them back in and they dominated possession thereafter without really threatening us. We have the hex over Bradford, and they are our closest geographic rivals. We also beat Donny earlier this season and seem to raise our game for Yorkshire clubs. Sadly, only 14th and inconsistent , another season of Lower to mid table mediocrity is looming
