General football thread

Harrogate once again followed Leeds and lost. Its uncanny how for 3 seasons we have mirrored our bigger friends in pretty much every
Move we have made, although weve moved our game from a pressing game to more direct as the season has professed. Still averaging 55. Percent plus possession which for a team in the lower half is encouraging, and weve changed half our team in January window as well.

If Seagull is not spotted here on the forum for a while, don't worry, he is off practicing penalties in case he gets a call up. wink

Sorry Seagull.  Couldn't resist.

Harrogate won and are now 12th and only 5 points off play offs. Can look up rather than down now !

When you see Brighton play, and the chances they create, it really is amazing that they are in the position they are in. I'm still sure they will eventually be fine, but on paper, their position now doesn't look great, and Palace (H) and WBA (A) would be the type of fixtures they would have been hoping for / expecting 4-6 points from, had the chances to win numerous matches, but ended up with 0 points. Southampton and Newcastle in their next 3 matches, so another chance for them to pull away, but they obviously need to put stick their chances away.

I wasn't sure what the best result for Newcastle was in that match, you could have made a case for all 3 outcomes.

What can I say. The 2 most ridiculous games of football Ive ever seen in the space of a few days!

Disallowed goal was a joke. Ref says we can take quickly we score and a second before it goes in he blows again for no reason? No words. I thought the Palace game hurt but this is worse. No one has any confidence going forward and Im genuinely concerned now.

Very sympathetic re the disallowed goal. Lee Mason mistake. I do however think the keeper should be allowed time to set up the wall. Really like the way Brighton play now, dynamic around the park, create lots of chances. Within their fiscal limitations Brighton have recruited well, finishing is the issue very hard to find cheaply. I think Potter is a superb manager indeed he would be top of my shortlist if Smith were to leave Villa anytime soon. Fortunately cant see it.

Sheffield Utd, Fulham & West Brom wont let you down much though I would like to see the Baggies stay up. The West Midlands needs its derbies, Villa v West Brom my favourite.

Totally agree here. He blew his whistle without checking if the keeper was ready and then tried to correct his error by blowing it again JUST before the ball crossed the line.

We had a similar situation when Leeds played Southampton last week and Ché Adams thought he had scored. But here I think the ref got it correct.  Southampton players were asking why they couldn't take the quick free kick. But that wasn't the situation. A quick free kick should be taken almost immediately. But once they haven't done that and the ref has said "wait for the whistle", they can't then take it quickly.

But in the Lee Mason case, he DID blow the whistle so that is more complicated. Definitely a refereeing error.

Ignore the "Leeds" centric text in the tweet itself, but the table in the graphic makes interesting reading. it shows how many matches have been missed per club because of injury/illness.

I guess that makes today's Palace vs Fulham a top vs bottom clash.

So much sad news in the football world these days. Glenn Roeder has passed away at just 65 years old.

I think it is more to do with us ageing and seeing our heroes pop if this mortal coil. Glenn Roeder was such an upright player always remember him in the black & red rangers hooped away kit (beautiful) shimming past players as he stepped out of the defence with the ball.

As for the injury lots of variables from tracking players mileage and making sure you dont overload them to the type of player you can afford ie. veterans bought for experience and talent players with injury problems predictably will loose games. Would expect to see the older squads up there. Liverpool didnt expand their squad enough given the number of competitions they were in. Its not like they dont have the cash to recruit and rotate are the only really well resourced club in the top half! Loosing a few players each week is neither here or there for most of them. Fulham ironically probably need to see a few more players putting their bodies on the line!

Congrats.  Have to say Martinez has been the best keeper in the PL this season.  Great signing for you.
