General football thread

Project Big Picture.

www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/10/11/world-exclusive-man-utd-liverpool-driving-project-big-picture/

Some interesting ideas on how to restructure football. I am in favour of some of them but have doubts about others. I don't like the idea that some clubs in the PL will have stronger influence than others. That smacks of protectionism to me. But the idea that a percentage of PL revenue is filtered down into the lower league EFL clubs has got to be good for the overall future of the game.

Harrogate back up to 8th with a win over Bradford today.

Just listened to nigel travis of leyton orient, behind the plans. Feels they could be improved with negotiation but in essence are good. Lower level clubs need the immediate money , restricted payments, salary caps etc.

I personally dont like the 9 clubs having most votes but do like 18 clubs and 2 + 1 play off relegation is fine and makes total sense to me.

Is my memory failing me or did we used to have a set up where there was a 2+1 play off system for relegation.  Not totally against it but what the current system has which is better for me, is that there are far fewer "dead" fixtures in the Championship - as I know from experience over the last 10 years LOL.

With 4 teams in the playoff from the Championship, the last couple of weeks of the season can still have almost anyone in the top half battling for that play off spot. I think if you reduced that to 2 teams (+1 from PL) you would lose that.

I also don't have a problem with the 18 team PL.  I wouldn't miss the Charity/Community shield  either.

I could be wrong but I think the proposal is that top 2 in Championship get automatic promotion and then teams 3,4,5 join 1 PL team in the play offs - currently 6 Championship teams get to play in something at the season end, so they would lose 1 place.

Re memory failing, I think you are correct in the early days of the PL, the play offs included a mix of PL and Championship teams playing in the play offs and I actually think that is not a bad thing, I think Scotland still does that if I am correct?

Yes, Jon the Scottish two legged P-O system between the top 2 divisions is:
1) Chammpionship 3rd vs Championshio 4th
2) Championship 2nd vs winner of 1)
3) Premiership 11th vs winnet of 2)

The other two league play-off systems also include the upper league second bottom team but here on an equal footing in 2 SFs and a final.

I don't think that there was ever an Englidh Premier team involved in a fdkegation play-off but I could be wrong.

Some good ideas in isolation. But what many have said seems true in that overall it does seem a very cynical opportunist plan by the leading Premier clubs.

I hope it doesn't backfire on the lower league clubs in that the plan has now indicated that the Premier League could help out the lower league clubs without government help, albeit the government has initially indicated concetns about the power grab element.

For me, the good ideas and the offer of cash for lower league clubs are there to disguise the real motive. Two American owners have seen the current situation and are trying to use it to grab power and slowly introduce a franchise system into the UK hierarchy, as they have in the USA, to protect their teams from any future demise.

Despite the perilous state of the finances of lower league clubs, I still hope they don't sell their souls to the devil and agree to this.

There is no giving anybody anything the initial payment is then repaid through the EFLs 25% take of TV revenue from the PL which has 18 teams and only 34 fixtures ie 6 less to sell, the top 6 will have additional European revenue and power to push through changes that suit their agenda.

Liverpool just lost 7-2 to the team who finished 17th last season and knocked them out of the league cup so the plan would be to relegate 17th annually and abolish the league cup to avoid it happening again ha! Wolves, Newcastle, Villa and Leeds are a big threat to the self appointed top 6 going forward these measure have one agenda only, to nullify it. Similarly there are potential big fan bases at Sunderland and within Sheffield, South East London/Kent, South Wales, Bristol & the south west that could also support a PL club with European aspirations. Not a hope if those successful in this short window of time get to write their own rules from this point on. Bit like the present US president being given the opportunity to write the US constitution.

Yay, when Scotland hit the target they score. In the last week:

Scotland 0 Israel 0 AET ( Scotland won 5-3 on penalties )
Scotland 0 shots on target in the 120 minutes vs 1. Then all their 5 penalties converted.

Scotland 1 Slovakia 0
Scotland 1 shot on target vs 2

Scotland 1 Czech Republic 0
Scotland 1 shot on target vs 6

Best not to mention the England performance - which of course you didn't anyway.

It doesnt count as an England performance unless the team is truly representative of the nations talent. The floppy haired prince did not play and therefore I switch my allegiance to an adjacent province of the union, meatball was marvellous very pleased for the Jocks. Fascinated by Southgates explanation of bringing a centre forward on to the left wing on the grounds that the FHP is too slow and not athletic enough.

Town beat Barrow yesterday, go 7th.

But main thing was it was our first home match, on the new grass, and first ever league match in harrogate. And we won!
