Entries Week 20 - 13/05/19

With Seagull still tied up, Flamingowings and I will continue our split substitution roles this week. Now that Katie B has made her mind up - by withdrawing from everything she was entered into - and Harriet has as well, here are the initial more confirmed set of WTA entries.

WTA

Rome Premier 5 $3.45m (Clay) -  Konta

FUTURES

France $60k (Clay) - Dart, Swan (Silva)

Japan $60k (Hard) - Watson, Broady, Dunne (Moore)

Spain $60k+H (Clay) - (Bains, Jones)

Korea $25k (Hard) - Lumsden, Barnett (Christie)

Portugal $25k (Carpet) - (Grey, Webley-Smith, Allen) Alt: Carreras

Singapore $25K (Hard) - Appleton (Mokhtari)

Mexico  $15k (Hard) - Lindh (Dissanayake, Stuart)

Sweden $15k (Clay) - Popescu

Trinidad & Tobago $15k (Hard Indoor) - Gillan (Robinson)

Tunisia $15k (Clay) - (Barrett)

A few quick comments on the above. First, there are a huge number of tournaments this week, both W25 level and above, and W15. If you want to play competitive tennis, nows your week to beentering,as you can see from the current W15 entries, a few seem to be doing. With the number of tournaments available, it's open season for those with excellent scouting skills, like Emily App - good choice there, with by far the weakest field of all the W25s on offer this week.

At the WTA level there is just the Rome tournament, and even though it is only half the financial value of Madrid the week before, Jo is not yet on the confirmed entry list which stops at WR43. However, if she has entered, would expect her to appear on the MD list sooner rather than later. Katie B has withdrawn from all 4 of the W100 and W60 tournaments she was entered into, so either she is chancing Rome qualifying or she is taking the week off. Her withdrawal from week 19 too, suggest the latter might be the case, unless she appears in Madrid qualifying. No Laura entered into anything this week, after also pulling out of her week19 entries, so appears she will wait to the grass season to try and regain her WTA ranking.

Katie B isn't in the Madrid quals list, so along with pulling out of Spain W60 this week, it surely must be health / Fed Cup back issue related, it's clearly not a case of tennis burnout anyway. Hopefully she is OK for WTA Nuremberg w/c 20th and of course the French Open.

She's Alt#2 according to the list on the Italian edition of Ubitennis.

Let me know if I've missed anything/anyone

ATP

Rome Masters 1000 (Clay) - Edmund (Norrie, Evans?)

Challengers

Heilbronn 92,040 (Clay) - Ward (& quite far down on the alt list, Choinski)

Samarkand (Clay) - Clarke, Klein

Gwangju Open (Hard) - Broady? (a guess, if he's now made the MD of the week previous) Hoyt

Futures

(as a note, 3 x 15K tournaments were cancelled that were supposed to run during this week - perhaps from the changes to the tour?)

M15 Prague (Clay) - way down on the alt list (Romay, Dixon, Bevan)

M15 Hereralion (Hard) - still in Greece are Glasspool, Draper, McHugh (main draw ITF junior reserved - Story) (Foley, Kivanda). Jhun (1st alt)

M15 Casale Monferrato (Clay) - (Martin)

M15 Cancun (Hard) - Peniston, Stoute, Paris, Canter

M15 Kalmar (Clay) - Whitehouse

M15 Tabarka (Clay) - (Modica)

M15 Antalya (Clay) - (Chaudhry)

M15 Kampala (Clay) - Storrie (Hale, Farmer)

Here is the Rome doubles list: from Brits we have Jamie (w/Bruno as per), Joe (w/Rajeev). Dom (w/Bopanna) and Neal (w/ Santiago Gonzalez this time) are in the alts list but with it being a 32 draw, they should get in I would presume?

Jo is confirmed in the Rome field now. Gabi after her 2nd retirement in first round matches in two weeks has withdrawn from Obidos next week.

Kiana Mokhtari (2002 born) has got into Singapore qualifying. New name to me. She seems to be based in Melbourne.

Never heard of her either, looks like she switched allegiances from Australia in Nov/Dec 2017.

She's been playing for GB since 2017 definitely - she's been in the junior threads several times - but always playing down in Aussie/NZ land.
