I thought Naomi Broady made a very good point during the Eastbourne tournament about the Wimbledon ranking points situation.

As she said, ranking points are very much about helping you get into the big tournaments. Wimbledon is clearly one of the very biggest. So having previously gathered the ranking points that have got you into Wimbledon and / or a seeded position why would you not then turn up and give it your best at Wimbledon, ranking points there this year or not?

Basically she is saying ranking points are a means to an end, to entries, to seedings, and Wimbledon 2022 is surely one of these ends ( whether this one will help players to other future ends or not ). It is ultimately about winning the big tournaments and to a degree prize money. Big tournament, big prize money right here.

I thought it was very well put, just logical. And while the ranking points situation may effect the effort put in by a few who see themselves as having no real chance of progressing ( and more want to gather ranking points for other aims ), it's more generally why I can't really get my head round suggestions of some sort of 'exhibition' tournament. It is Wimbledon!!

Not a British player but Alize Cornet will be playing in her 62nd consecutive Grand Slam equaling Ai Sugiyama's record for women.  US Open to beat the record which is not likely to be beaten for the foreseeable  future.

I am really excited that it is day one Wimbledon. Best two weeks of the tennis calendar. But is anyone else a little deflated like I am about the ranking points situation. Don't get me wrong I am looking forward to seeing how our Gents and ladies perform and wish them all well. But as a follower of British tennis players I always look at the rankings and see where a player might go to if they do well. For example, Ryan Peniston, I would normally be looking at his ranking and thinking if he could win a couple of rounds here and keep his good fortune going, he could be at another ranking high and nearly top 100. But of course now he or any other player could go on a glorious run to the forth round but they get nothing back other than prize money. Those ranking points gained in a slam can set you up for the next part of the year and where you go and play. So, excited it's Wimbledon and go GB tennis but sad about no ranking points especially when our boys and girls have been doing so well of late.

I think what we need is a solid rankings points follower like Indy or TA or Lambda to create a what if rankings list based on points the players might have won if points had been allocated- lets depress ourselves in 2 weeks time by saying what might have been?!

on a serious note, I half expect one of the live sites to do this, effectively a shadow rankings, although not seen any evidence they will do.

Yes you are right. No need to depress ourselves. We all just want the same thing. To see our players d

Re ranking points. Apologies if already discussed but I assume last years' Wimbledon points will come off. Whilst it's a level playing field in that none of the players will gain points,  there will be huge variations in how many are coming off  and this could really  mess up  the  current  ranking tables I imagine?  (Because Grand Slams  deliver far higher points than other tournaments the losses are going to have more effect.)

I think it will Julia. Players like Jack Draper, who didn't get Wimbledon points are going to benefit quite a lot.

Not sure if it has been mentioned on this thread as I haven't followed it closely, but did anyone else see the rumours a couple of weeks ago that Russian hackers were targeting the Wimbledon scoring system.

Seems to be more that people are worried it MIGHT happen rather than a particular threat, but if GB players start losing unexpectedly .....  wink

Of course, if things had been normal, all the Wimbledon 2021 points would still have been coming off anyway so players without Wimbledon wins last year would be relatively benefitting. And players with big runs last year falling unless they could repeat ( which clearly won't help them now ).

It's rather misleading for players like last year's women's RU, Karolina Pliskova, and men's quarter finalist Fucsovics, to suggest that they are being made to suffer. They can't replace these points but no-one can earn 2022 points.

The real big difference the whole affair will cause is for the big performers this year ( and Pliskova and Fucsovics say may well not be among them ) who don't get 2022 points. So, probably the better grass court players though there are always of course shocks.

And of course Novak is one of those most badly affected.  Live rankings show he's now down to 7 in the world, 3000 points behind Medvedev.

Again, one of those most badly effected if he goes very deep again this year ( he was dropping his 2021 title points, leaving him live ranked #7, whatever ). The most badly effected for total points, compared to where they would otherwise have been, will clearly be the Wimbledon 2022 winner, whoever that turns out to be.

I see tomorrow is once again: Novak, Emma and Andy on centre court.

Its a hard one but it almost feels like they are saying putting these big names on court one cant happen. But court one is a big arena itself and certainly historically the top names have always had some play away from centre court. I dont think its any hardship to play on court one. I remember seeing players like Lendl on court three , Becker on court two, Graf out on court 14 i think it was.

Personally Id have put one of them on another court tomorrow.

Looks the right choice to me from the scheduled matches.

I would think if these 3 players continue on, with likely more enticing alternatives emerging from bigger clashes happening as the tournament progresses, then there will likely be some moves away from these 3.

In the first couple of rounds, before we get to seed vs seed matches, it seems reasonable to me to give the Centre Court crowd the names that they would in general be most looking out for.
