Russell Fuller seems to be suggesting that if points are scrapped for Wimbledon then points won last year would still come off which would be very bizarre . Effectively youre then punishing many players who wont have a chance to defend their points . I cant see this going down well .
The ATP and WTA really need to think hard about what theyre doing here.
But as already stated, if you protect points that's then unfair on the players who didn't earn points last year, especially new players on the tour, and now can't improve that.
It's also unfair because it punishes all players and not Wimbledon. Wimbledon will be annoyed but will lose little sleep. Imagine you're ranked 80 in the world and you have a good run at Wimbledon that would theoretically put you top 50 or 40, you're then eligible for more main draws, higher profile tournaments and bigger pay checks.

As you will no doubt have gathered if you have been reading my previous posts, I don't consider it bizarre to drop Wimbledon 2021 points and also have no Wimbledon 2022 points.
The 2021 points will have been more than a year old and the 2022 would be a non ATP / WTA points sanctioned tournament. I look at rankings ss being more about earning points over a 12 month period than defending them ( and everyone will be treated the same re earning points ).
Not being able to defend or earn points would generally be more of an issue for good grass court players though not for anyone, generally good grass player or not, with hardly any Wimbledon points to 'defend' such as new players to Wimbledon. So far from ideal but there wouldn't be an ideal solution. I could well live with no Wimbledon points at all in players' ranking points.
And arguably, as some of us think, the more important issue is for the other UK tournaments to be able to award ranking points given Wimbledon can probably much more look after itself.
Yes, absolutely. There's no issue in my mind about the points being dropped and no new ones.
After all, when a specific tournament is cancelled (for whatever reason), it's simply cancelled. The points drop off. Your best 16 or whatever still count. It's the same for everyone. Wimbledon will be no different from a cancelled tournament as far as points go. You got them last year. This year's tournie cancelled. They drop off now.

This part of the statement is worth reading though
We greatly value our long-standing relationships with Wimbledon and the LTA and do not underestimate the difficult decisions faced in responding to recent UK Government guidance. However, we note that this was informal guidance, not a mandate, which offered an alternative option that would have left the decision in the hands of individual players competing as neutral athletes through a signed declaration. Our internal discussions with affected players in fact led us to conclude this would have been a more agreeable option for the Tour. We remain hopeful of further discussions with Wimbledon leading to an acceptable outcome for all concerned.
Door left open IMO. Dont expect Wimbledon entry list just yet.
What the atp are saying or implying is that if Wimbledon had got the players to sign a declaration opposing the war, that would be fine and theyd be ok to ban any players not signing that declaration.
The atp doesnt actually care about the players as we all know that wasnt possible as it would have exposed those players to repercussions in Russia. But the atp would have been ok with that.
Terrible organisation and morals. Actually proud of Wimbledon in this if theyve stood firm on their position.
Separately, ITF ranking points will only be retained in UK-based LTA tournaments in ITF World Tennis Tour, Juniors, Wheelchair and Seniors international tours if satisfactory alternative equivalent opportunities exist in other countries.
Presumably therefore the J1 events before Wimbledon at Roehampton and Nottingham will be stripped of points status as Will British Open wheelchair after Wimbledon as there are no equivalent alternatives.
Presumably also, all the M/W 25 events are safe as there are alternatives on offer.
We therefore wish to state our deep disappointment at the decisions taken by the ATP, WTA and ITF in removing ranking points for The Championships. We believe these decisions to be disproportionate in the context of the exceptional and extreme circumstances of this situation and the position we found ourselves in, and damaging to all players who compete on Tour.
We are considering our options, and we are reserving our position at this stage. We are also in discussion with our Grand Slam colleagues.
