Week 18 - ITF W80 Gifu, Japan Hard

Naomi couldn't have hoped for a better opening qualifying draw, playing a local wild card who only has 1 solitary ITF point. Tara didn't make the cut, but as she flew out with recent doubles partner, Emina Bektas, a few days ago, I assume they'll be trying for doubles.

Q1: Naomi Broady (GBR) [q5] 300 vs Yuika Sano (JPN) [WC] UNR/1771

Yes there is a bigger contingent in the entry list for next week with Naomi and Katy D in the MD and Tara in qualifying, so she will at least play singles then. Potentially the week after too, depending on how that entry list shakes out.

Naomi is 1/200 to win, surely she can't not?

And Naomi does win 6-0 6-2 and will play Erika Sema of Japan WR389, who put out the Q8 seed by the same score

Wins 7-6(3) 6-2. smile

I've not checked the potential main draw opponents, but hopefully it's favourable.

Fingers crossed - one spot is Hibino, and one is Watson cry. The others don't look too bad, but at this level none of them will be easy.

The other 4 options are Hibi, who like Naomi, has been higher ranked previously, Kobori and the Korean Han who won her last tournament, beating the promising Wang Xiyu in the final. There's also a WC, Naito, who's just turned 18 but was a good junior and has done quite well on the 15k scene this year.

Think I'd prefer Naito or Kobori out of those, but it is great that she has qualified and has 6 points in the bag, the equivalent of coming through quals and winning a 25k R1 match - something she's not been able to say for a while.

A lot of obstacles in the way before then, but Hev could face off with Hibino again in the QF.

The 6 FQR matches have now finished so we should learn Naomi and Heather's R1 opponents within the next hour or so.

Naomi gets Han, Watson gets Omae and they could meet in the last 16.

I'm not actually seeing the qualifiers placed in the singles draw yet, but in the doubles we have too representatives too. Naomi is playing with Luksika Kumkhum and they are 2nd seeds, and as noted at the top by RS, Tara has travelled here with Emina Bektas and they are in the doubles too up agains the Japanese 4th seeded pair, Kobori and Shimizu
