Even allowing for Covid what has happened to Emma  of  late?; Her last ranking tournament seems to have been  Sunderland in February of 2020.

She played battle of Brits before Xmas and did well, winning 2 of 3 matches. And won UK Pro Series 6 in the summer. She must be fit, maybe just being cautious .

I think she referenced a run on her Instagram stories the other day so presumably is fit. I'm not sure she wants to travel until the pandemic subsides.

Wouldn't blame her. Loads of time on her side.

No sign of Emma playing in any tournaments yet. Is she studying for her "A" levels?

 I thought they'd been cancelled?

Just as an aside, as Emma's been getting a bit of stick/ questions asked as to why she's not playing at all, I note that Jo Garland also has been out of action (re competitive matches) for the last 6 months

(Jo being the girl the same age as Emma, with British dad and Chinese/Taiwanese mum, who plays for Chinese Taipei, but also plays a lot in the UK, team tennis for Herts, or whatever, who is also very promising and a lot of talk about the LTA trying to 'woo' her)

I suppose the questions re Emma could be that she's one of those being sponsored by the LTA PSP funding and her last few tournaments have mainly been the domestic events in the UK; not that these aren't great but some of the matches are potentially not as challenging as playing international events - 15k, 25ks which other PSP recipients like Jodie, Fran, Draper etc. have gone out to do. Joanna played a few international events e.g. 15Ks out in Egypt late last year.
With COVID and potentially A levels , its understandable that Emma's travel schedule up till now has been limited. Would be great to see her out and about on the tour soon

Joanna is a little older than Emma, she's 20 in July, but yeah, she did play a lot of tennis in that Egypt swing, 29 more (tour) matches than Emma since September, to be precise.

I'm a little surprised she hasn't played since as she was on a few recent entry lists, before presumably withdrawing. She did cram a lot of tennis into that period mind, so perhaps she was a little burned out, or with those 2 titles, and 2 further finals, perhaps she did better than she was expecting, so given herself a bit of time off. I do follow her progress, so it would be good to see her back out soon, and Emma as well of course.

More off topic, as there's no British links at all, but a little similar with Qinwen Zheng, who is the same age as Emma (3 weeks older). She was ranked 630 when the tour restarted in August, has played 11 events since, won an impressive 4 W25 titles, and is now around 250 in the rankings, just off her career high, but she has also not played since January. She played extensively in Europe, but I believe she is back in China at the moment. www.tennisexplorer.com/player/zheng-13301/

I think Garland has been in Taiwan since after Christmas working on fitness, I don't think she'll be switching.

Judging from Instagram Emma still juggling studying and practice despite no exams this year either. Also involved in some new LTA kids scheme.

Just because there's no exams doesn't mean she doesn't need to study. It's good to have a back up plan post tennis and education is one way to do that

Looking at the assessment plan for Emma's school, assuming she's still going to the same school she did her GCSEs at, there are exams over the last 2 weeks in April for students in their final A-level year . I would expect her to be back after that, although with their being hardly any hard court tournaments over the next couple of months I don't know where she's going to play.

Yes, no formal A levels but all the work that goes towards getting the teacher A level assessments she wants through internal exams and perhaps other ongoing general assessment like coursework.

She was hardly likely to have any sort of free ride just because there are not the normal formal A level exams.

In practice though aren't the teachers going to pass almost everyone, especially the school's star tennis player (even if she probably doesn't need the help)?

On Instagram it seems Jodie Burrage is also studying again online. Didn't she turn down a US College offer?

She's young and still plenty of time but there will come a point fairly soon where she will need to decide whether to try and make it in the pro game.

I don't know what you mean by "fairly soon" but at 18 she's still got loads of time  I guess most if not all of us would like to see her out there like Clara Tauson shooting up the rankings. But hey she's doing things her own way, and as a bright girl has been concentrating of late more on getting the most out of her school education. A year or two ago she was having minor injury issues / growing pains. A slower initial pace may do her little harm at all.

That said, I do get the impression that she will commit fully to the pro game from later this year ( I'm not sure that she has ever had any other ultimate goal ). Maybe everyone will be happy then

Yes, surely the fact that she hasn't signed up for US college shows that she is intending going pro?

I mean, yes, she might be aiming for UK unis, but that seems exceptionally unlikely. US college is an absolute slamdunk choice for a bright, excellent tennis player, with international connections. The fact that she's not doing that must mean she's going pro, surely.
