Emma Raducanu

Alessia's withdrawal was up on the site last night. Presumably picked up an issue in her 1-4 4-0 11-9 QF match. Or thought it wasn't worth hanging around a day just to be beaten by Emma. Or both. It's not much off a training run for Emma but I guess it's better than nothing....

Seemingly, in the semi-final of the BT event at the Connaught Club, Emma Raducanu [1] LOST TO Katherine Barnes [4] 6-1 1-6 10-8

As you may expect the articles profiling Emma have started to appear.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jul/03/i-have-high-standards-for-myself-emma-raducanu-britains-18-year-old-tennis-star

Nothing particularly new in this one, although it repeats the claim that Sears has been her coach since she was 15.

Mike Dickson in the Daily Mail says Nigel Sears has been guiding Emma since April. Simon Briggs says Nigel Sears has been her main coach since the start of the grass court season.

Lots of huge excitement in foreign climes too about the wonderful first week of Wimbledon that Emma's been having.... Only the 4th female GB player since 1990 to makes the last 16, and without losing a set, despite being 338 in the world:

Elles sont britanniques et se sont qualifiées pour les 1/8 de finale de #Wimbledon depuis 1990 :
Samantha Smith (1998)
Laura Robson (2013)
Johanna Konta (2017 & 2019)
Emma Raducanu (2021 )

INCROYABLE @EmmaRaducanu ! La 338ème (!) joueuse mondiale s'est qualifiée pour les 1/8 de finale sans perdre le moindre set ! #Wimbledon

1er tour vs Diatchenko | N°150 | 7/6 6/0
2ème tour vs Vondrousova | N°42 | 6/2 6/4
3ème tour vs Cirstea | N°45 | 6/3 7/5

I was quite critical/disappointed when she didn't play much for many years after I saw her on the Wirral when she was 15, but it seems like that was the right thing for her.

Yes a few other people and myself rolled up in the Wirral  back in November 2018 to watch Emma play. She lost and I had  to look up who it was. It was a Latvian player called Diana Marcinkevica. That was early days for Emma.

I hope Emma's family and team will take a good look at how Osaka's rise to fame has been handled. She's a very marketable and excellent young athlete and I just want to see that smile on her face for as many years as she chooses to compete.

She seems to have the temperament and support to cope with her new found fame, but the novelty can wear off. And attractive young players have to deal with a lot of press and interest that has nothing to do with their game. I just love the thought of having another Brit featuring on the main tour !

Here's a good interview with Matt James about Emma.

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/emma-raducanu-matt-james-ajla-tomljanovic-wimbledon-nigel-sears-b1877883.html

Interestingly, it was Nigel Sears that invited Matt James to be Emma's coach. Matt is back working with Emma on a temporary basis.

At live ranked #175 Emma has shot up to #4 live ranked under 19, if still a little behind 17 yo Coco Gauff (live #22!) And also after from the top 100, Leylah Fernandez (#72) and Clara Tauson (#95). Though now going forward Emma should be on roughly as regular a tournament schedule.
