Lovely line from Daniil Medvedev on
@bbc5live
just now, when asked what he said to his fellow #USOpen champion Emma Raducanu: I said congrats, what else can you say? But I don't know if that's enough to be in her movie!"

Sent to me by a tennis friend who remembered Mr Heynold from when he played her son in his Junior days hmm

Revealed: The strapping former tennis prodigy who Emma Raducanu has known since she was six and has been the rock at her side during her stratospheric rise in New York - while even her parents were forced to stay at home
US's Covid travel rules meant UK's latest tennis superstar was robbed of chance to celebrate with her family

Yet it seems there was some support from back home in the Big Apple after all, the Daily Mail can now reveal
Miss Raducanu was cheered on to victory in New York City by a friend that she has known since the age of six
Former tennis protege Benjamin Heynold, 19, has been by Miss Raducanu's side throughout her stunning rise

Ben Heynold was one of the 2002-ers who was much touted by the LTA a few years ago, along with Toby Samuel.

At the same time the LTA were pretty much completely overlooking Felix and Arthur (which p**sed me off, as I moaned about at the time).

I didn't realsie that Ben's dad is Director of some big international investment banking firm. Which explains a lot.

However, he's probably a very nice lad, and it's good that Emma has friends whom she's know for a long time around her.

Just listening to Naomi C's latest podcast...

www.tennishpodcast.com/podcast/episode/2bbeca74/147-emma-raducanu

Apparently, Naomi's brother was her coach for a few years, from age 11, and Naomi herself was regularly hitting with her at age 13.

Looking forward my favourite tennis journalist topping the Xmas bestseller charts.

Coming home, possibly playing Indian Wells, no mention of Chicago.

Sounds so right.

Take a whole week off and enjoy it. Do the talkshows, go to the Met Gala, do bucket list stuff like visiting the NYSE. Great.

Still doesn't know her upcoming tournament schedule but maybe will include Indian Wells. Fine for now.

Then ...

Back to work early next week. Good. Time enough then too to consider her schedule with her team. I certainly hope she does play IW at least before the season end.

Back home before her next tournament. Good. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she does some UK talkshows. Let it roll and get them out the way.

Then onward to a productive off season and 2022 ...

The Daily Mail saying they've applied to trademark 'Emma', 'Raducanu' and 'Emma Raducanu'.

Well, I can see 'Emma Raducanu' working but 'Emma' ? I don't think that's going to fly - not really fair on all the other Emmas, or Jane Austen lovers, or whatever.....

But just as a motely assortment, my favourite comments were Emma's dad saying, when she phoned him, after winning, 'oh, you're rather better than I thought'.

And the fact Emma said they don't talk much about tennis at home.

And that she'd basically had her phone taken away for most of the time (or just the last couple of days, not sure) in New York. Now THAT'S sensible....

It depends on what classes they are seeking to register it under. They will be out of luck with "Emma" as that is a mattress and they've already bagged the UK trademark for the advertising class, which presumably Emma's team will want.

 Interesting, tx.

Bet the mattress company are happy.... smile

ADD: just from googling, no idea, isn't the mattress company's mark 'Emma Mattress' though?

Just from a selfish point of view, I'd love to see her play IW and then the WTF.

In terms of WTF, Naomi Osaka is out and Ash Barty's coach is sounding v negative about the venue. If they are both out (big if) then 10th spot is only 47 points ahead of Emma, 9th is 150 or so points ahead of her.

So it is incredibly tight . I think she does right to miss Chicago. If she plays IW then and is in the hunt and wants to go for it, then I reckon she has the choice of Linz 250, Moscow 500 and maybe Courmayer 250 if she feels she wants to chase the WTF slot. Presumably that will depend on whether IW leaves her close, qualified or too far back to make it worthwhile. Maybe Linz will be a stretch straight back from IW but Moscow WTA 500 would make sense, assuming the Russians give her a wildcard -and if she was in the chase for WTF, presumably they would almost have an obligation to give her such (as well as other players who are definitively in the chase and not entered on time)

Emma wins understatement of the month, apparently her tour schedule will change slightly as her ranking has gone up, not sure now being entitled to a WC at any tournament she wants would be considered a slight change but heyho
