Agreed, they are a series of 3 events on the World Tour, each of them appears to be in Abuja. From what I recall, there was a little discussion around this 12 months ago and Nigeria had until 2016 hosted a Challenger event ($50k) but went back to 3 futures/$25k+H events. I am sure I recall reading that they would like to build towards an ATP250 event, which would be great if they could achieve it and the Abuja venue looks decent. At the moment, this weeks Marrakech event is the ONLY African ATP Tour event , not even South Africa host one, and it would be a good thing if the ATP can somehow support another location getting onto the main ATP Tour. As far as I can see there are no ATP Challenger events , at least before end of July, in Africa, which is a sad indictment - back in the day, Cairo, Lagos, Tunis (they may still do a Challenger there), Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nairobi and Zimbabwe have all hosted main ATP Tour events at some stage.
14-year-old Mukhtar Andu has been given a wildcard for the Tombim Abuja Open, while the remaining slots are up for contention, according to tournament director, Ikani Agabi.
Andu competed at the Lagos Open in October last year, where he defeated Christian Paul to reach the second round in the second leg. The win saw him become the first player born in 2004 to win an ATP Point.
The youngster represented Nigeria at the Under-14 AJC qualifying events in Togo earlier in the season, and made quite an impression in the event.
