Now that qualifying always starts on Monday, so in theory there is no overlap with the previous tournament, can anyone please explain what the criteria are for an SE. I assume Lopatetska has one here as she's not in the qualifying draw?

It's just reaching a F the prior event. No overlap as you say and in the same country, so doable, I guess it's just rewarding good performance and frees them from playing multiple matches in a row with no break.
Lopatetska will be 16 on 23rd April - I make this her 9th tournament af W25 or above since her last birthday out of the maximum of ten allowed. So don't be surprised if she drops to a W15 in the next month.

I think it was just her 7th - 2 60k in Canada last year, the 2 in HK that she won at the start of the year, a Japan 60k and 25k in recent weeks and then this one, unless I have missed any? So if that's the case, she should be able to play next week and a couple more before then.
Add qualifying at the 100k in Dubai to your list, and the upcoming one will be the 9th
It's the third W25 in a row in Japan for her

Dubai doesn't count as she didn't receive any ranking points. It's only events in which WTA ranking points are gained that count as a tournament played for the AER total.
Hmm, I guess some consistency with the WTA's "tournaments played" ( which can be a divider in rankings ) in their ranking lists when they actually count tournaments points scored in as if the non points scoring tournaments didn't exist.

Thanks AV. I think that's perfectly reasonable - I just hadn't caught up with the new rules.

Well, the Age Eligibility Rule is obviously there to stop younger players overcompeting, but it makes no sense to allow them to play any number of W15 events (or higher level qualifying events if they score no points).
