Week 7 - (ITF W60) - Shrewsbury, GB Hard

Enjoyable day. Good to meet forumites Daisy, Julia Carrot and Philwrig.

Very well attended day, must have been 100-150 spectators at the peak.
Maia was excellent, despite an injury at the end of the second set.
Naomi didn't suit the slow courts and she has lost some pace on serve. George Morgan now coaching.
Only saw the second set of Fran. She was hitting huge forehands and they were still coming back. She got frustrated and tried to hit bigger, but could get the accuracy
Laura was excellent for 2 sets, but ran out of gas. Her return of serve was superb.
Jodie had a very one sided match. Looks like she is serving bigger and hitting bigger. The serve was a bit inconsistent.
Freya was trying to outhit her opponent and she kept making errors. Going backwards.

Good to see plenty of LTA staff watching. Iain Bates, Jane O'Donoghue, Jeremy Bates plus all the players respective coaches.

The discussion about Alicia earlier in this thread got me thinking that we hadn't seen anything of Beth for a while. I thought she and Olivia might have got a doubles WC if they were fit (the Pitaks have one). Anyone heard anything?

I did message Beth yesterday wondering exactly the same. Hasn't played a tour event since early December. And Liv last played at Shrewbury in November, when the pair of them won the doubles. I'll let you know if I hear anything, although I doubt I will.

Alicia and Beth are both in the alts list for Macon in week 9  - #37 and #28 after the withdrawal deadline - so they are trying to get places.

Unfortunately both have had injuries. Beth hopes to be back by the end of the month. They wouldn't have a needed a doubles wild card had they been fit to play.

Don't think that's happening, but we can hope...

(Not showing on draw at the moment, but is on the prder of play)

Well down Maia, a wonderful win. Was interesting to see her play the player who beat Laura yesterday. Maia was massively more consistent than Laura, and also very good at coming into the net, something Laura does not do well as she cannot volley well, nor is mobile enough. But a wonderfully assured performance from Maia, and I liked the way once she had that second set break she managed to hold it through the rest of the set. Closed out very well in her last two service games.

15 points for her now so far for the week, but Wickmayer the top seed up next.

Top seed Wickmayer up next. Wickmayer has had some impressive scores this week, dropping just 8 games so far, but before that she wasn't in great from. Didn't play from the US Open until Australia and since then she:

Lost to Hives in Brisbane Q1
Lost to Juvan in AO Q1
Lost 2-6 2-6 to Kiick in Newport 125 R1
Beat Lu and Li in (I assume) Midland 100k, but then lost in straights sets to Robin Anderson in the QF.

Perhaps she was slowly coming back from injury and just hitting her stride, but with Maia loving the GB indoor events, it won't be beyond her, although the Belgian will start as favourite.
