Davis Cup 2019

New look Davis Cup starts next week, GB obviously not involved until the finals ( I wonder if an Andy Murray - less GB would have got the wild card to the finals?? Presumably not).

From top players, Zverev, Thiem, Khachanov, Shapavolov, De Minaur, and a few others are playing but not many. Most interesting tie looks to be India v Italy for which Italy has Seppi and Cecchinato playing but the Indians are taking them to Kolkata and a match on grass which should make it fun.

New 2 day format with best of three sets being played, interesting to see how it goes.

Thiem isn't playing. He is still recovering from whatever made him retire at the AO.

Ok, thanks - Davis Cup still has him listed in the squads that were released earlier this week, so I went with that

Most of the ties have now been drawn and Thiem did indeed drop out. Germany (Zverev, Kohlschreiber), Russia (Khachanov, Medvedev), Australia (De Minaur, Millman) all seem to have strong squads out and are taking it seriously.

I noticed that the Davis Cup site shows the court speeds, at least for the hardcourt (ie non grass, non clay) matches, Australia is rated as fast officially.

Looking forward to seeing how these go. We will of course then know the full listing for the DC Finals after this weekend.

Early scores today:

Serbia took a maybe surprising 2-0 lead away to Uzbekhistan

Australia took a comfortable 2-0 lead over Bosnia at home

Italy ditto away on grass to India - good performance for them

Kazakhstan took first rubber at home to Portugal, up in second match

China and Japan are 1-1 after day one - only close match so far

7 ties dont start til later

God, it's depressing reading through the scores with the best of three set matches.

What's going on with the zonals, can't find any matches?

Thanks- any idea how the draw is structured? Presumably each group is one from each pot, are the quarter finals then a free or is there some seeding?
