Week 1 - Challenger ($81,240+H) - Playford, South Australiia (hard)

L48:  Kamil Majchrzak (POL) WR 181 (CH = 178 in October) vs Dan Evans WR 198 (CH = 41 in March last year)

The winner of that match will face the 14th seed, Luca Vanni.

48 draw events look very crowded. I must be getting old.

I dont like this new format.

Going to be virtually impossible for players to transition and if and when they do transition, they have to play L48 draws???

I'm with you, plus 16 players get byes which I never really like to see. With 4 players qualies draws, which aren't appearing on live scores app at the moment, that transition is also Limited.

Yes, and I've just looked at the upcoming ATP rankings again. Next week we will have only 12 men with more than 10 points!!!! Followed by Jack Draper with 6 points, then just 4 others with 1 pt each from reaching a 25k final. Just how are players going to transition? And those players who already have points, are therefore going to have a huge advantage in keeping their rankings, because they are certainly going to find it much easier to keep getting into Challenger draws.

Pendant alert/wondering query: So if this is week 1 of the 2019 tour, shouldn't Dan's career high be 41 = in March/April 2017 rather than last year? Although, obviously it's still last year at this point.

agreed- I've always felt a key aim here is to create a protection in terms of livelihood around a cadre of pros ranked from say 250 to 600, and give them more security by making less opportunity and movement from the next tier down apart from the very best of the younger breed. It will make it much more like golf in the longer run I believe

I think the increase in challenger draw sizes (main draw) is one of the best things (or the only good thing?) about the new system. More access for players for higher events and more matches for the fans. Of course on the negative side prize money will be spread more thinly and 4 player qualifying is beyond stupid.

Debating about whether to hang one on you... wink

Seriously, you're right about Dan's CH dating from March last year (for once, I forgot all about the ATP's infuriating habit of showing dates the Yank way, i.e. month before day [on the live scoreboard entries at any rate] &, what's more, did it for both players!    Errors now corrected).  Technically, that may be correct, but it's not yet week one of 2019 & I saw little point in referring to 2017 instead of "last year" when I was starting a post in 2018!  In addition, qualies kick off on New Year's Eve, so still in 2018.  wink

Didn't realise Dan had gotten so high in the rankings. I assume down to the new rules.

Hopefully he can have a good start to 2019 with here and the Aus open

Dan's current 24/12/18 WR 198 is still under the previous ranking points system. Just where he had risen back up to.

According to the openera live rankings site he will go up a bit to WR 189 on 31/12, the first rankings with futures points almost entirely wiped from the ATP rankings.

According to Twitter it was a decent level of tennis but Majchrzak played the big points a lot better. Rustiness for Evo after a few months of inactivity perhaps.
