ATP Cup

Looks like Tim Henman is going to be Captain for the ATP Cup having been selected by Andy and the other likely team members

www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-7649375/Tim-Henman-set-make-shock-comeback-captain-Great-Britain-ATP-Cup-January.html

I wonder if there is a longer term plan for Tim to take on Davis Cup or even get into coaching, although the report goes out of the way to say Leon isnt impacted by this

We are now drawn with Belgium and Bulgaria, and Moldova as well in the ATP Cup in january, so Goffin and Dimitrov,  and Albot. Still fancy our chances there. All have decent number ones as you would expect given the format, but our depth is better than all 3 group opponents.

The full squad is out for ATP Cup

The GB team is Andy, Dan, Cam, Jamie and Joe - so no Kyle in this team as Cam replaces him as he is ranked higher, and Joe replaces Neal also as he is ranked higher in doubles.

I think ATP Cup selections come down to rankings, not choice like the Davis Cup.

But not in Andy's case, Jon, as he is not in through his ranking yet.

Andy's in through his protected ranking. From the ATP website:-

"Rankings to be used for entries are the 52-week ATP Rankings. A Protected Ranking can be used to enter provided the players Protected Ranking is valid through the entry deadline for which he is eligible. Protected Ranking will not be used for team seeding."

Indeed, as the addict says hes in on protected ranking, which secured our entry.

I'm not sure how it plays into who plays 1 and 2 ie if andy plays would dan or cam play as number one. ?

More from the ATP FAQ's

"Can a player play singles and doubles?
Yes. The team captain decides who plays doubles. The on-site ATP Ranking order must be respected for singles matches. For example, the No. 1 ranked player on a team based on on-site ATP Rankings at the start of the competition cannot play No. 2 singles. Protected Ranking will be considered the official ranking for line-up position."

So that means Andy will play No 1 and Dan No 2 with Cam in reserve at No 3

That's good news, I reckon we would beat Moldova 3-0 and be favourites versus Bulgaria,  and slight favourites v belgium.

As if to highlight the lack of credibility of this event, chris guccione of Australia, who hasn't played a match in a couple of years, used his PR in doubles to get a place in the australian team squad.

When you look at the squads in this, so many have one or maybe two decent players and then are very weak. The winner will be a team with a decent number 2 and a solid doubles pair.
