Jack Sock's title defence starts in R2...can he make it past R2? The signs are not good.

Khachanov is the highest ranked non seed at WR 19 ( a CH after winning the ATP 250 Moscow 250 title ) and certainly looks rather more of a a danger than the aforementioned 16th seed, Sock WR 18.

The Russians Khachanov and Medvedev are both on the up and are part of an interesting youngish 5 within the 6 live race 11 -16 which currently reads : Coric, Fognini, Edmund, Tsitsipas, Medvedev and Khachanov ( Medvedev has beaten Tsitsipas in their Basel QF meeting ).

The overall top 16 live race positions, as well as showing such as these youngsters advancing ( with the promise of some great rivalries), are a bit of a commentary on the **** generation.

6 players up to and including age 23 ( Zverev at #5 the 6th of that group ), 8 players 30 plus, with the remaining 2 being Thiem, recently turned 25, and 28 yo Nishikori.

I guess Dimitrov and Goffin ( both 27 ) are contenders, but their race positions and coming ranking drops reflect these big points that they will soon drop as last year's O2 finalists.

Dimitrov - 27 ?! Where have the years gone Dimi and just another thing that makes me feel even older.

Indi - it always amazes me that Wozniacki is still under 30! Seems to have been around forever.

Also, who isn't more of a threat than Sock!?

Neal getting in with Isner's high singles rankings. He wouldn't have got in with either Ken or Joe. Good for him.

The worry is though that if Isner does well in the singles and they get through R1 doubles, he pulls out of the dubs. Because this has been known to happen.

I reckon Isner is after all game time he can get after a little time out. Hopefully he will see it through in doubles. Good test for dom + versus a tough pair, and presumably Mike Bryan playing here with Sock means bob is definitely out of O2.

Actually if peya remains injured and he and mektic don't play London, then there is a lot to play for this week, dom and franko could still theoretically reach London if they somehow win this event, especially if they win Basle final. Longshot but...

Isner is well known for playing as many games of tennis as possible, the Wimbledon 5th set tie break rule was put in to protect us from having to watch it! John is only getting warm when hes played 12 games in the 5th set.

With this coming week the live rankings positions now equating with the live race positions, Kyle's starting positions in both will be #13 ( with Dimitrov's and Goffin's points from last year dropping off ), which will be a new CH ranking position if held until next Monday.

Could go higher ( even to WR 10 if he won the Paris title and Isner didn't win his opening L32 match ), could drop a few places lower.

Neal up nine places to a career-high 34 & Dom up three to 21 in today's rankings. Franko's up six to a career-high 26, so their combined ranking is now 47, while Neal's & Isner's is 102 (68+34).
