Week 42 - ITF ($100K) - Suzhou, China - Hard

Interesting first round match for Katie B, tougher than she will have been expecting/ hoping for. In contrast Katie S's could not be easier, perhaps some local wild card winner.

R32: Katie BOULTER (GBR) [4] 96 vs Misaki DOI (CHN) 136 (CH:30 Oct 16)

R32: Katie SWAN (GBR) 165 vs Jia Qi REN (CHN) [WC] 959 (CH:876 Sept 18) 18yrs (JCH:48 Jan 16)

EWS and Ankita are in the doubles, but no breaks for them, they get the top seeds up first.

They could meet in the QFs. Swan would have to get past the 8th seed for that to happen.

As well as beating her wildcard and KB winning her 2 matches of course.

Katie S obviously coming back from an injury lay off so even though rankings would suggest it might be an easy win, it may not be.
Good to see her back playing though.

Live rankings shows Katie B moving ahead of Heather this week in the rankings, presumably that is correct? I see a good week could see her into the 80's in the ranks?

Yes Jon, Heather will lose the 60 points she gained for reaching the Luxembourg QF last year on 22/10, and she only has 1 pointers to replace so she will fall to 628 points. Katie B can of course add further to her 647 points this week. But even if she doesn't the 18 points she has coming off on 29/10 will be replaced by a 9 pointer = 638 being the minimum she can be in two weeks time. Winning just one round here is 13 points, and she does have one 9 point counter, so would be +4.

Out of curiosity Michael, when It gets to this stage if the season, how do you find out what the 16th counter is? Wiki can be good for the race to Singapore and Zhuhai but unfortunately Hev is obviously a long way off that. Is it just a manual calculation or is there a specific site you use?

I use this to check points and rankings
openerarankings.com/WTAHome
If you look at the i next to the points, you get a drop down listing all counters, including non-counters.

Katie S is 1/33 fave to beat her 9/1 wildcard. I was quite surprised to see Boulter and Doi both 5/6 in their match. Katie is about 60 places higher but I suppose the Japanese woman has been in decent form, winning Vancouver and then getting a few wins in WTA Asia events, albeit mainly qualifiers. Still, obviously could have been far easier.

Yes, this is what I use too AV. It not only has the drop off dates, but the different tournament categories that are important for the higher ranked players.
