Week 42 - ITF ($15K) - Cantanhede, Portugal Carpet

She's only gone and done it:

R32: Taro KEENS (GBR) UNR beat Claudia CIANCI (POR) 1227 (CH:1095 Oct 16) 6-2 6-3.

Well done Taz!

(Edit: I think that may be her first main draw win)

Taro was 2 points from serving it out to win 2 & 2, but was broken. But she broke back in the very next game to win 2 & 3
Is that her very first ranking point ?

Yes it is smile

 Well that's great !

I had a quick look at her ITF profile, and couldn't see another counter.

Well done to all 3 on their R1 wins.

Alice will keep a ranking for now, in covering the point that was due off on 29/10, though still has a counter due off on 26/11.

Doesn't matter hugely with the big changes coming up but we will have at least 28 ranked players at year end and hopefully say Alice and Aleksandra Pitak can yet make that 30. Not long ago we were only guaranteed 24 but Tiffany William guaranteed her stay and Lindh, Popescu and the Katarzyna Pitak earned their rankings.

Still problems in Portugal. Play put back until not before 12 noon, with three first round matches not finished, and two still to start.

They've scheduled all eight second round matches for today as well hmm

Taro lost her match, 7-6(4) 6-2, against the French quali girl, born 2002

(Surprised that Taro was the clear favourite with the bookies).

Taro served for the first set twice. The first time she served 2 DFs, the second time 4 DFs...

I think Anna and Alice's match was a fascinating match up, since they both have the same rank coming into this week. The stats say Anna is the better server - 5 aces to 0, and 69% first serve won to 61%. Anna won 7/20 BPs against Alice's 5/9, so created far more opportunities, though Alice did comparatively well at defending. Alice was also marginally higher on 2nd serve won, and overall there was only 7 points in it. Next up appearances can be deceptive, better to look at Pislak's CH than her current ranking, since next week she will have a rank. In fact, including this week's 2 pts, Pislak already has 13 pts from 3 events, including a 25k QF at Obidos last week, and so she will be ranking well within the top 1000, when she regains it next week.

L16: Anna Popescu (GBR) 1175 beat (4) Alice Gillan (GBR) 1175 6-2 4-6 6-4
L16: Taro Keens (GBR) UNR lost to Aminata Sali (FRA) [Q] UNR 16yrs (JCH:1667 Jan 17) 7-6(4) 6-2

QF: Anna POPESCU (GBR) 1175 vs Manca PISLAK (SLO) [Q] UNR (CH:500 April 17)
