Also a career-best win, improving on Krunic WR47 in Washington this year.

Live rankings shows Katie at WR99, but that may not last long, as there are a number of players still in tournaments that can overtake her.
The 30 points from today's win replaces 9 from Obidos in April

There are but it would take some major upheavals for more than one person to go past Katie. The two immediately behind her in the live rankings, Ons Jabeur and Fiona Ferro both lost today. Next in line Lusika Kumkhum would have to beat Alize Cornet their R16 match in Hong Kong and then win her QF match too, to go past Katie (unless Katie wins two more matches herself). Further back three others still have a chance, but if Katie does not win another match, but they'd have to reach finals. Win her next match and Katie will pass a few more players and place her top 100 ranking next week beyond doubt.

You beat me to it, Michael. I was about to say that most of them would have to reach their respective finals, and only Ferro was a real danger - but she has since lost since I originally posted anyway.

I make it that currently 3 players would have to reach their SF to have a chance of passing Katie's live # 99 position. 6 more in all can still overtake her ( 1 by reaching the final, 5 by winning the title ). Clearly some of these will clash at some point.

Re the first 3, they all have seeds to face next, so in that respect Katie has a rather easier looking next match.

Katie : current live points 617

Luksika Kumkhum, in Hong Kong L16, current live points 579. Points if reach SF 659. Next faces (8) Cornet.

Veronika Kudermetova, in Tianjin L16, current live points 539. Points if reach SF 619. Next faces (5) Hsieh.

Ekaterina Alexandrova, in Linz L32, current live points 516. Points if reach SF 626. Next faces (9) Siniakova.

One more round should make things a lot clearer, especially if Katie can get that L16 win and move up to 647 points, as said not just pushing further ahead of pursuers but passing players too.

At the moment I think odds are yes in Katie's favour but a little too many still in some contention to be fairly sure about it.

From her WTA site matches page, I make it that overall against top 100 players this year Katie has won 9 and lost 7. To be in such credit, while yet herself to enter the top 100, shows a very good record at rising to the challenge of such well ranked players, maybe more than has fully been appreciated, and certainly indicates she will belong when ...

In ranking order, she has now this year beaten : 42, 47, 64, 73, 75, 91, 97, 98 & 100, and lost to 17, 18, 18, 45, 51, 57 & 61.

Before this year, her CH win was 106, with Taylor Townsend, then WR 97, representing her maiden top 100 scalp in February. To follow that with 8 more in the year and hopefully now to crack the top 100 has made it quite a breakthrough year and it's not over yet.

That's really interesting when you show her results that way Indy, and what is most interesting is Katie's consistency there. She's beaten EVERY player she's faced in the top 100 ranked 64 and over. Those results clearly show her current ability level as being around WR 60 right now, which gives her a considerable upside just on current form. I know she has lost to players outside the top 100, but on these results Katie is showing huge upwards potential still.

Emily and Ankita in as alternates.

Saved 4 break points, but missed 7, including 4 at 4-3*.

Lost the tiebreaker 7-4.

So very close, but a set they had chances to win.

They've stepped it up a bit. *5-0
Their opponents combined ranking is showing on the app as 235, against Emily and Ankita at 936

They played a pretty perfect second set but made a slow start to the MTB and couldn't draw level.

I think they'll be frustrated not to have taken their chances in the first as they could have won in 2, but a bit of a bonus sneaking in.

Out 7-6(4) 1-6 10-5

Emily has lost her last 7 MTBs which is a bit of a nightmare.
