Week 39 - ITF ($15K) - Melilla, Spain - Clay

We move onto the other Spanish enclave city in North Africa this week. Ali Collins is in qualifying - just the one round - and Alice Gillan should be in the MD.

QR1/FQR: Ali COLLINS (GBR) UNR 18yrs (JCH:64 Jan 18) vs Marina DELGADO VALERO (ESP) UNR 16yrs

Interesting to see Ali back after the aborted effort at the academy in Florida. And then (IMHO) the rather strange choice of Nik Slater as coach, training on home shores.

The girl certainly has talent but her team has not managed things well (from a tennis point of view) - will be curious to see where she stands now.

There are now two threads for this - some mod could maybe consolidate them?

Week 39 - ITF ($15K) - Melilla, Spain - Clay

Ah it's fun causing a little chaos occasionally... I copied from the last Spanish tournament at Ceuta and forgot it was two weeks ago not one confuse

I just skimmed the list looking for week 39 entries, saw only WTA ones so started entering the ITF ones, resulting in the duplicate.

Well Ali Collins hasn't had too many problems in qualifying here!

MD is out now, and it's a very good draw for Ali Collins since even though Alice Gillan is seeded Ali has the easier first round match.

R32: Ali COLLINS (GBR) UNR 18yrs (JCH:64 Jan 18) vs Keira BLACKBEARD (CAN) UNR 15yrs (JCH:298 Jan 18)
R32: Alice GILLAN (GBR) [7] 1033 vs Julia PAYOLA (ESP) 1075 (CH:778 Nov 14)

Should Ali expect a few canon balls from her opponent, she had better be prepared to advance with all guns blazing.

Melilla is an old coastal fort city, so might have been the kind of place Blackbeard would have attacked in the past. Now of course the place is more worried about being swamped by illegal immigrants rather than pirates, and has a massive border fence with Morocco.

Yes, Michael, I'm with you - it looks like Alice G is seriously going to have her work cut out. But I reckon Ali C should get herself a ranking point, no problem.

Well, don't think that was ever seriously in doubt.

One point to Ali Collins with an easy win over the 15 year old

Ali got broken twice at the beginning of the second set to be 1-2* down, but that was it. The pirate arrived without weapons as she failed to win a single service game. This is Ali's first point. She could play the 4th seed next, although she is currently 1 set all with a 18yr old unranked Spanish player with no junior record. Alice G is up later.

R32: Ali COLLINS (GBR) UNR 18yrs (JCH:64 Jan 18) beat Keira BLACKBEARD (CAN) UNR 15yrs (JCH:298 Jan 18) 6-1 6-2
