I am a big fan of the changes or though less of the super regionals, the final tournaments running into the individual NCAAs at the end of May will be a top quality week of tennis. Fair play to the USTA in this consolidation and distillation of the top of the game into a meaningful end of year tournament. Making the sweet sixteen is a bit to saccharin for me. I think any college player realistically thinking of playing pro needs to feature in Orlando early in their junior career and then often.

The Cal boys wont be going, Oklahoma predictably also went down to Wake Forest. Aswin will at the bottom of the Virgina order who beat the Stanford men (Soderlund beating Geller at No1). Alistair Gray will however, now at No 2 for TCU who disposed of a very handy Mississippi State.

Emily Arbuthnot will with Stanford (at 3/4) as will Megan Davis with high riding South Carolina. LSU (Eden Richardson lost to the lower ranked but experienced Java Hart of UCLA). Arizona State (Lauryn John-Baptist) are also out.

NCAA quarterfinal action - Brits left in as detailed by Oakland above.

Men Thurs 16th: The Virginia Cavaliers look to take down ACC rival and defending national champion Wake Forest. Big 12 Conference foes clash when the Longhorns of Texas go up against the Horned Frogs from TCU.

Women Fri 17th: Defending national champions Stanford meet the Pepperdine Waves . ACC vs SEC as the South Carolina Gamec*cks battle the Duke Blue Devils

Thanks EP some really strong tennis on offer over the rest of the week and into the weekend, initially in the no 1 slots in the team tournament but closely followed by the individual singles and doubles championships. All at the national tennis centre in Orlando, its all much tighter to facilitate USTA development of college players.

Orlando is not my idea of a holiday destination. Disney not my cup of tea, theme parks I can take or leave but this is beginning to look like a bit of a treat.

Not wanting to get ahead of myself but there may be some collateral benefits for U.K. players. Next year the Cal boys will be a year older and more experienced so may get there, South Carolina (when already good) men have some quality in coming (Connor Thompson) to add to Paul Jubb who along with Emily Arbuthnot will be a Senior. Paul I would hope would play and then head for the pro grass court season. LSU women who are a young team should also strengthen.

Stanford women march on Emily Arbuthnot clinching victory over west coast rivals Pepperdine, playing at No 4 it was another quick time two set win 6-1, 6-4, they now play UNC in the semifinal.

Megan Davies lost her singles slot also down at No 4 as Duke defeat South Carolina. Emily Smith was playing for Vandy at No 6, loosing one of the key bottom court matches that allowed #1 Georgia to comeback to win despite loosing the singles point.

Congratulations to Emily Arbuthnot who is a back to back NCAA team winner.

Stanford (No 3) beating No 1 seed Georgia 4-0. 


Emily won her doubles with partner Micheala Gordon (who in time we will see on the WTA tour), Emilys game was still live in the 4 slot when the match finished with Stanfords greater depth cleaning up slots 2,3 and 5 in double quick time.

This is no accident, Stanford have an outstanding coaching set up and despite 5 seniors leaving (Only 2 play regular singles at 2 and 3) I would anticipate another strong bid next year. Slots 3-6 could move up without a significant drop in potency, Emily would potentially struggle at 2 against the very best teams but one strong recruit in the summer and they would be favourites? Ironically their challenge is not attracting but finding such a player who is academic enough to satisfy the entrance criteria.



Now onto the singles tournament!

Both Ewan Moore and Paul Jubb are through the first round of the NCAA. All the Brits in the same side of the draw! Paul could play Dan Little in the 2nd Rnd then Alistair Gray in the rnd of 16!

Similarly Emily Arbuthnot could meet Eden Richardson in the rnd of 16.

Unfortunately both Eden and Emily go out in the first round. As have Charlie Broom and Alistair Gray.

Dan Little becomes the first Utah player for 20 yrs to make the second round beating Alabamas Mazen Osama 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3. Very pleased for Dan who has played his tennis in the No 1 slot for Utah getting results top quality tennis as they play in a very strong PAC-12. I expect many of his regular season opponents to go deep here.

Unfortunately he is up against the No 4 seed next a Mr P Jubb

Was hoping Charlie B would do well as he will be a senior next year and allegedly will try to go pro after college.

Alisatir Gray TCU, Oli Nolan/Henry Pattern, UNC Ashville, Tad Maclean, Auburn, Nick Brooke's, Northwestern and Barny Smith, Texas A and M the doubles today. 

Tad (Auburn), Barny (Texas A & M) and Nick (Northwestern ) all safely through to the dubs quarterfinals

Paul Jubb #4 defeated Dan Little #45. Predictable but tighter than expected with Dan breaking Paul on more than one occasion and a tight tie break to finish 6-4, 7-6(7). Benjamin Siguoin #39 of North Carolina next up.

Ewan Moore of Tulane #65 lost to a tough opponent #7 Aleks Kovacevic of Illinois 6-3, 7-5. Ewan will have one more crack at getting all American status as he moves into his senior year. He had opportunities here and the view of the Tulane coach Marc Booras was a little more consistency may have seen him into the last 16.

Paul J is the only remaining Brit as he goes into the quarterfinals today. Only the second Gamec*ck (wish it wouldn't object to this word!) to reach the NCAA quarterfinals in the programs history. Paul will meet no 61 Oradini of Mississippi State.

Thanks for reminding me Strongbow. Holly is playing British Tour at the Connaught Club tomorrow. There must be some college players entering ITF's in the States though - there a number of 15k's in the next few months.

Yep a 7-6 6-3 win and Alek Kovasevic next (#7) who has had a break out season this year. He beat Ruffice, SEC Freshman of the year but played in slot 2 for Florida. Paul didnt see him in University of SC 4-1 loss, although put away Oliver Crawford their no 1 for South Carolibas Only point. Alek has a bye so pretty well rested. Prior to that he knocked out Ewan Moore who according to his coach had some chances.

The other side of the draw plays out as per seeding with Borges (Mississippi State) No 1 playing Rybakov (TCU) No 3.
