Good win for University of South Carolina over Ole Miss (of the Blind Side fame ... Sandra Bullicjs best film). Paul Jubb winning his doubles and singles (first off in the no 1 slot), tough test next up against Mississippi State #10 who have a heavyweight top order including Nuno Borges top playerin the SEC regular all American (and academic all American) who knocked out our own Jan Choinski of qualifying at Charlottesville.

Eden Richardson put away the No 1 player in the college tennis in 3 sets in LSUs loss to No 2 Georgia (4-2) Only the second time an LSU Tiger has beaten the No 1 player in programme history!! They also lost to Tennessee but Eden didnt manage to finish. Very good to see Anna Loghlan playing doubles and at No 6.

Jacob Fearnley has signed for TCU where he will join up with Ali Gray at Cams old school. Ali now playing in the no.2 slot did play this weekend ie TCU didnt play after an easy win last week against Illinois.

Jack Molloy (playing 4) and Ben Draper (6) had a good weekend as Cal who hadnt been doing all that well took out No 6 USC

Stanford aniliated Oregan 7-0! Emily Arb playing 3 winning in straight sets.

Lauryn John-Baptiste has dropped to the No 2 slot at ASU but won both her singles against UCLA and USC

Paul Jubb continues to excel lost on a final set tie break to Nuno Borges of Mississippi State after taking the first, Nuno has arguably been the best player in college tennis for a number of years now. That was last Sunday, since Paul has put away the Tennessee Vols no1 in double quick time. In this form Paul is definitely in the NCAA pucture come the end of year singles tournament, despite being a junior this year? I presume he registered early, he is only 19, if American the USTA would have a very close eye on him with a view to funding transition to the main tour.

Big test for Eden Richardson on Sunday LSU take on no4, Vandy.

The 'American parents cheating to get their kids into college' scandal has, not unsurprisingly, also affected the tennis community.

Texas head coach, Center, has just been sacked:

"According to court documents, Center agreed in 2015 to accept approximately $100,000 from Singer as a bribe in exchange for Center to designate a student as a UT tennis recruit, thereby facilitating his admission to UT. The documents said the student was a California resident who did not play competitive tennis."

Also:

"Authorities allege that Ernst collected bribes totaling $2.7 million over several years in exchange for designating at least 12 applicants as recruits for the Georgetown tennis team, including some who did not play tennis competitively."

And more....

How on earth that could happen when the colleges all have an army of compliance staff is incredible!

I can see how it could happen.  Compliance is all about not speaking to the coach before you are allowed to, not having earnings from your sport etc etc.  The sporting ability assessment is purely down to the coach.  I can see other non-revenue sports being caught up in this....golf, volleyball, lacrosse, hockey, skiing etc etc.

But the saddest thing about this whole scandal is that it seems many of the kids were unaware of what their parents had been doing on their behalf.  I just cannot imagine how crushing it would be to find out that achievements you were proud of turned out to be part of a scam.

Often see posts from people wondering about the cost of college tennis - FaceBook post from Sarah Borwell of Tennis Smart on how it (literally) pays to be clever!

'Boys who don't always have access to full scholarships, if your ACT/SAT is high, you can get very close to a full even without the athletic money. Once you add the athletic scholarship brings the price down even more! Many of my boys are receiving full rides or are paying less than $5000 when they are strong academically & have UTR's 11.8 + . For girls who are below the 8 UTR benchmark, you will likely need to work on the same basis as the boys and high scores mean large scholarship offers.'

The example on her FB page shows UAH Merit Tuition Scholarship Chart which is Div 2, so not sure if the post covers Div 1 and Div 2 and how many boys/girls are on large/full scholarships.

Once you are out of the Power conferences, not all university's have the full 4.5 athletic scholarships for boys or 8 for girls, so most have to combine with academic scholarship........

May need to scroll down to post from 11th March if follow the link below:

Paul Jubb got a second win of the weekend as U of S Carolina lost on the road at SEC powerhouse and Isners alma mater U of Georgia. A slow start but won 2-6 7-6 6-2 against the nations no 20 college player. Paul is 11-2 against nationally ranked opponents.

Jack Molloy got a win for Cal but has now dropped to the No 4 slot on the team. Jacob Brum at no 1 received some bakery products from Axel Geller (Ex ITF junior no 1 and Wimbledon and US Open junior finalist) ranked 13 one placed behind Paul. They are both 19 Paul just 4 months older.

The best performance of the weekend goes to Eden Richardson who won both her doubles and singles runners against Vandy, LSU loosing 4-3 but Eden saw of the No 3 ranked college player in her top slot battle 7-5 7-5. Anna Loughlan also played at No 6 for LSU.

Paul Jubbs and Eden Richardsons recent standout performances against top ranked players has boosted their national college rankings to 5 and 10 respectively, Alistair Gray is also riding high at 25 along with Emily Arbuthnot at 17. I cant recall GB having three top 20 players of either sex before although Emily will drop if she continues to play at 3/4. All these guys are playing power conference tennis so will be matched against high ranked players so they can beat them and improve their rank particularly if like Pail and Eden they are in the number 1 slot.

Kenneth please let us know, you probably have a much better idea of who has just started and is doing well, we (well I am) always interested to know who is doing what elsewhere, I am just able to keep an eye on the players doing well in the power conferences primarily because I am interested in players who may transition to Challenger tennis (thats not really many players) but the general standard of tennis throughout Division one is high, indeed the standard at a level consistent with the early rounds of the better British tour events and all but the very best domestic tennis leagues across Europe

Very solid wins for Eden in both doubles and singles as Missouri failed to stretch LSU losing 4-0. Anna Louglan is now firmly established in the third doubles pairing but didnt feature in the singles. Tougher challenge next week as they are back to SEC action playing big guns Florida, Eden has 8 wins against ranked opponents.

Singles wins for Paul Jubb against UK and Vandy neither major forces in mens college tennis at the moment although Paul still had ranked opponents in the No 1 slot, requiring all three sets against Vandy but winning in straight sets against U.K. against college tennis no 35 ranked player.

Jack Molloy was back in the No1 slot for Cal as they wiped Nevada in an out of conference match, Jacob Brumm appears to be injured so an opportunity for Jack to press his case to play higher up the order.

Stanford wiped Hawai 7-0, Emily down to no 4 in the line up with a national rank of 17! That is a truely deep team.
