Emilie has migrated to Spain this week (well North Africa to be specific, since that's where this enclave is located). This field is very weak, so if she can win through and gain a draw against anyone but the top 3 seeds, she should have a good chance of finally getting her last counter. And no, you fates, you have dealt your tough hands, this week your job is not to interfere adversely!

Yes, this is DD. Get this win, and Emilie will subsequently be able to play in 15ks when she wants to, instead of having to look for tournaments with non-full draws. At least the fates have stayed their hands this once... just about. The winner will likely play the top seed in the second round. If it's Emilie though, she won't care about that.

I hope that isn't how she sees it. Sure, getting a third counter would be a personal achievement and milestone for her which should be celebrated, but realistically all it gives her is easier entry into 15Ks during the off season. This tournament was a good opportunity to collect some decent ITF ranking points for next season. Unfortunately, that opportunity is somewhat scuppered by possibly facing the top seed in the second round, should she get through tomorrow. Fortunately her 15K results from earlier in the year give her a mid 400 ITF ranking putting her in a much better position for getting entry into 15Ks next year with or without a result here.
Getting that third counter will be a huge monkey off her back I bet you. Its been months coming. And the fact that she has no national ranking makes it hugely difficult for her to get into tournaments at the moment. For now she will still be focused on this year as she needs to make more headway before the years end.
Well, D-D or not (which may well be more in this forum's mind than Emilie's but it makes a good story ), Emilie is now into a first set tie-break so fingers crossed.....
Whew, this match has been very close so far... hard to follow on live scores. Emilie served for the match at *5-4 but was broken, and then the TB was close till 4-4 when thankfully Emilie won the last 3 points... So a set to go now 7-6(4)
And congratulations to Emilie she has finally got her third counter!
R32: (q) Emilie LINDH (GBR) (age 18, born 2000) UNR beat Alisa AXYANOVA (RUS) (age, 18, born 2000) UNR JWR 1509 (JCH 831 in Jan '18) 7-6(4) 6-2
This will give Emilie a ranking of between 1050 and 1100 when the point is added, giving her 7 points overall. She will also find it much easier to enter tournaments in the future, and so should enable her to boost her ranking further between now and the end of the year, and the new transition circuit. She can now go into her potential seocond round meeting with the top seed with a spring in her step...

A good day for Emilie ends with her and Paulina Jastrzebska winning their first round doubles 6-1 6-4.
Paulina has a singles ranking of 1111, and plays her first round match tomorrow. Her ranking is of note only because in the tournament where Emilie gained her first counter by reaching the QF in Stellenbosch late last year, Paulina was the player she played in QR1 and beat very easily.
QF: Paulina JASTRZEBSKA/ Emilie LINDH (POL/GBR) UNR vs Claudia HOSTE FERRER/ Maria Jose LUQUE MORENO (ESP/ESP) [3] 1749
For these few months that of the year that remain she flies up entry lists above all the players with national rankings and quite a number with WRs.
Her original first point isn't due off until 10/12 so once counting for entry lists it will count for tournaments for as late as she wants to play this year. If still not that long overall before the new era, make hay ...
Could always at least get one more counter to be the one to stop me and my #stillnotguaranteed25rankedplayersbyyearend
The players that can drop off in order, if not adding counters :
Suzy L - 24/09 ( 1 counter this year ) Amanda C - 22/10 ( 1 counter this year ) Mirabelle N - 29/10 ( no counters this year ) Alice G - 29/10 ( 1 counter this year ) Emilie L - 10/12 ( 2 counters this year ) Tiffany W - 17/12 ( 2 counters this year )
So best hopes are Emilie and Tiffany getting 3rd 2018 counters and of course Mandy continuing her comeback and maybe quickly guaranteeing her ranking again. I'd be surprised if Steven ends up having to have a gap at #25 but we have been waiting for the guaranteed 25th for a little while now.
Of our players currently on 2 counters, 2 have earned both in 2018, Anna Popescu and Ema Lazic.
