By my estimation the seedings go down to 239 so it is a surprisingly weak field for what has always been a competitive event, so Jay IS seeded 6 or 7 but Dan is not

Silly me! Brendan's quite right & I got that one completely round my neck! Jay's the one who will be seeded, not Dan. Don't know what I was thinking.
On a serious note, I know folks seem to get disappointed when two Brits clash in these events but being frank, it isnt as if we have a great record of getting lots of players deep at Challenger level recently and so at least it creates an opportunity for one of them to move forwards. Personally, one would anticipate Dan being the winner against Alex Ward and it is probably a shame Alex had to play Dan, judging by the seedings for both of them it was a tough draw as could have been expected without playing a seed.
Tough draw for James Ward - reckon we will see Dan and Jay move on here
In truth in the generally relatively close fields of challengers rankingswise Dan and Alex are probably pretty well down the field, with Jay the #8 seed at WR 225 and the last direct acceptance being WR 376 (PR) on entry. Though Dan is clearly better than his current ranking indicates.
L32: (1) Jordan Thompson (AUS) WR 101 (CH = 63 in February last year) vs James Ward WR 333 (CH = 89 in July 2015)
L32: Alex Ward WR 338 (CH = 24 in June 2016) vs Dan Evans WR 323 (CH = 41 in March last year)
L32: (8) Jay Clarke WR 225 (CH = 218 at the start of this month) vs Chung Yunseong (KOR) WR 354 (= CH)
Dan leads the H2H v Alex 4-0, though Alex was getting closer (2 sets in 2011 and 2012, 3 sets un 2013 and 2015)
In the other two matches, the now-unseeded player has won the only previous meeting:
James beat Thompson in Traralgon in 2014 but it was by retirement (6-1 1-0) and back then, James was the no. 2 seed (WR 119) and Jordan unseeded (WR 278)
Chung beat Jay 2 & 2 in Osaka back in 2015 in the QFs of the big junior event there.

Jordan Thompson had a pretty rough time of it on grass, so isnt in great form, so hopefully James can catch him cold on his return to hard.
Decent draw for Evo, can see him making the semis at least. Has had beating of King and Frat in past if memory serves correctly, though I havent checked so may be wrong.
