Anton Matusevich

Couldn't find a thread dedicated to Anton in the Juniors forum, so decided to start one here, & I had heard so little about him & was intrigued to see something of his background reported in yesterday's London Evening Standard:

Analyst uses City skills to power his teen son to stardom

A financial analyst hopes his business acumen - and huge sacrifices - will help steer his teenage son to becoming a  Wimbledon star.

Anton Matusevich's meteoric rise has seen him practising with British stars, including Kyle Edmund.  Such is his promise that the 17-year-old, playing in the boys' singles event at Wimbledon this year for the first time, was handed a wildcard [sic] into the men's qualifying draw.  Despite losing to 21-year-old Czech player, Zdenek Kolar, Anton's family believe he has what it takes to reach the top.

Anton Matusevich Snr, 44, who works for HSBC in the City, said he was using his business nous to help his son.  He told The Standard:  "I work in the City, so am used to analysing things and working out risk.  I am good at setting out structure and getting conclusions.  I was trying to engineer something that would make a positive impact on his life.  I have also helped him with my own sports experience.  The sacrifices we have had to make - like Judy Murray with Jamie and Andy.  There is a lot that goes into it."

Anton, who is studying for A-levels in maths, further maths and economics, was born in New York after his father and mother, Kate, 43, moved from Russia in the mid-nineties.  Last year, he was regarded as the best 16-year-old in the world, helped by an incredible fastest serve [sic] of 135mph.

The fact that Anton was a wild card into the boys' singles & earlier today reached the quarter-finals lends credence to his parents' belief in him.  More power to his elbow!

As posted by DWH in the boys' wimbly thread, a very interesting interview with Anton:

Saw this interview with him, don't know if it has been shared already about being sponsored by clothing brand GANT, his tennis, life etc.

and a Q&A On Gant's page:

Seems to have a fortuitous background. Will be a stick on for Wild Cards to Queens and Wimbledon for a bit longer than many I would think. The other interests may work as a distraction as well.

It sounds Iike he is still in full time education at a state grammar school, and doing a rigorous set of A levels. No mean achievement with the tennis commitment, perhaps once they are done and dusted it will open up even more time to focus on pro tennis, although following a Cam like route through college is off the table with a sponsorship deal?

This is within Mike Dickson's article 1st October 2020 on the LTA response to Heather. Sports mail  understands Kent's genuine prospect Anton Matusevich last year's  Wimbledon junior quarter finalist has enrolled on a degree course at University College London. He is set to do it exclusively onlIne and still intends to pursue his tennis career.

Good on him.

Quite a few top players have done similar online degrees while training and competing.

He got such good A levels, and there's so much down time in tennis.

Hope it goes well.

Looks like Anton has been upgraded to a main draw wildcard for Wimbledon

That will be a bit premature if it happens IMHO.
