Ms Janssen Figueras did not make the MD, losing, 0-6 1-6

We do have 3 in that MD though, with Ella, on a WC, drawing the shortest straw, in the top seed; whilst Eden S & Maia (seeded 8) look to have winnable matches in a very weak draw.

Ella does indeed have a foul draw, but does at least get a point... Eden's match could be very close, and Maia also has yet to really shine in Portugal.

R32: Maia LUMSDEN (GBR) [8] 413 vs Estelle CASCINO (FRA) 515 (CH:406 Dec 17)
R32: Eden SILVA (GBR) 531 vs Yuliya HATOUKA (BEL) 528 (CH:527 June 18) 18yrs (JCH:144 Jan 16)
R32: Ella TAYLOR (GBR) [WC] 860 vs Jessika PONCHET (FRA) [1] 231 (CH:227 May 18)

Maia and Eden are playing together in the doubles; today it is just Ella's singles that is up.

At least Ella gets yea old WTA turning up point even if you're a WC.

I still call this, "a Beddow".

Whose ranking was the first I remember to have been comprised, at one point, solely of three 'Beddows'.

Well, these performances were really bizarre today. Maia started like a bullet winning her first 5 games, but then only won 1 more game the whole match! confuse

Meanwhile Eden was down 1-3 early in her match, but turned it round to win that set 6-4 and eventually the match in 3 sets. So she is the only first round winner. Disappointing, very, for Maia - don't know if anything happened to her - but welcoming points for Eden. Eden now plays Maia's conqueror.

R32: Maia LUMSDEN (GBR) [8] 413 lost to Estelle CASCINO (FRA) 515 (CH:406 Dec 17)  6-7(4) 0-6
R32: Eden SILVA (GBR) 531 beat Yuliya HATOUKA (BEL) 528 (CH:527 June 18) 18yrs (JCH:144 Jan 16)  6-4 4-6 6-3
R32: Ella TAYLOR (GBR) [WC] 860 lost to Jessika PONCHET (FRA) [1] 231 (CH:227 May 18) 1-6 4-6

R16: Eden SILVA (GBR) 531 vs Estelle CASCINO (FRA) 515 (CH:406 Dec 17)

Unfortunately Eden did not fare any better against Cascino than Maia did. Despite that Eden appears to have fought hard - the match took nearly 1hrs 45 mins. The big difference was that Cascino won 4/11 BPs and Eden 0/11. Even in the last game Eden was 15-40 up and had 3 BPs overall, but failed to win one of them. In the 2nd set she was only 31-36 down on points, which is much closer than the score suggests.

R16: Eden SILVA (GBR) 531 lost to Estelle CASCINO (FRA) 515 (CH:406 Dec 17) 2-6 2-6

Maia and Eden play their first round doubles match later today.

And the doubles is a damp squib, Maia and Eden losing to a Portuguese WC pair 3-6 6-7(1).
Thus ends the Brit interest in Setubal. A very disappointing week (again) for Maia, Eden at least takes home 5 pts.
