Week 23 ITF ($100k) - Surbiton, Grass

A quote from Harriet:

"Dart needed three sets to find a way past No. 4 seed Wickmayer (BEL) 62 36 60 and set up a semi-final clash with Gabriella Taylors conqueror Conny Perrin (SUI).

I went out there and tried to be really aggressive and stick to my game plan, I think I got a bit lucky with some bounces which helped me a little bit, said Dart."

I see the BBC think Harriet's next opponent is Perrin Conny (in the report about Dan). Unbelievable!!!

Why is it unbelievable that Harriet is playing Conny?

Because there is no player listed on the ITF site called Conny

But there is a Perrin  wink

A bit like her first round, there's been significant money going on Harriet's opponent to win overnight. The odds opened up at 4/11 (Dart) vs 2/1 Perrin, but now Conny is evens, so it's pretty 50/50. I was thinking 2/1 looked pretty big after reading a lot of the reports and comments about Perrin.

Really hope Dart can continue her run.

There's two (sets of) comments I've seen Helen. One was Pat51's comments on the match on the page before this and about Conny's game being perfect for grass, and then there are two tweets from Liz Curran that Steven retweeted.

"They both did a lot of running as they both defended well. One rally was 27 shots. It was a good match. I enjoyed watching the 2 sets. Connys serve is v strong but I thought overall Gabi has more variety so I see lots of potential to improve & hopefully go further."

"There was a definite swing in momentum. Connys head had dropped a bit after losing the tie break & her team were urging her on. Suddenly she broke & held at 4-4 & that was that. I missed the 3rd set but someone said she was breathing q hard, thought she maybe had a touch of cold."

Gabi's cold clearly got to her by the third set and she had nothing left, but Conny was by both accounts serving very well, since even early on Gabi got no break opportunities.

Nothing official or anything, just people on various social media platforms saying that she has been looking good here.

I'd neatly arranged my work this week so I was based right next to the club and could nip in from time to time and various thoughts are as follows:

Re the above, Conny has a great team around her - mainly Tara, Pablo (the dog) and one (maybe two?) coaches. They just do not let her get down. They don't shut up ! And she plays well on grass - the odds for Gabi's match at the start were mad. (Not saying that Gabi doesn't play well too but thinking of Conny just as a clay courter is wrong).
Tara, of course, has the same team in reverse when she plays - it's an excellent set-up.

Gabi has a great, great work ethic on court, no moaning, 100% left out there, plays with a low centre of gravity, takes the ball on....

For those talking out the GB girls as a cohort, Gabi doesn't seem to be part of it. It's all very European/Spanish - coach, tight family unit, lots of double cheek kissing, before matches, after matches, whenever - with no ultra-British worry about germs

The 'gang' seems to be Katie B, Jodie, Freya, Katie S and the lads - Liam, Jonny O etc. Lot of banter, messing around, all good stuff. But not for everyone. EWS and Sam seemed mates (the 'older' perspective?). Katy and Beth are mates. As are Katy and Harriet. Club allegiance presumably makes an impact.

Harriet, as ever, loves Surbiton. The first time I ever saw her was here, some four years ago. And she got my bet then and still has. She can get a bit cross and down in a negative way, but the work she's been putting in is excellent (especially when you consider what The O - I think it was - said about her style of play as a junior). All credit to her. Also agree with Steven that Katy has put in some serious time at the gym.

I know Katie S said she had a leg injury but she seemed to me to be holding her stomach/ribs too. Her hand would go to it after most shots - she didn't look 100%.

Laura, on the other hand, was moving fine (for Laura ). Looked happy and certainly fit for doubles. Crowd liked her, of course.

As they did Heather - one guy came to the stairs to the stands, desperate to get up to see Hev's match, against Gabi. At the same time, Dustin Brown and Matt Ebden were playing a cracking, spectacular 'Dreddy-style' match, and Dino and Serge were creaming the ball, knocking the lights out of it. And yet he only wanted Hev... (NB no one had the faintest idea who Gabi was).

NB As I (and many others) gave Nike mega stick for their hugely inappropriate tennis outfit a couple of years ago, just to note that this year's one is great - simple, nice shape and gorgeous teal blue colour.

Anna Smith was down there too.

Broken to 30 in her first game 0-1*, if Perrin's serve is as good as it was the other day then could be a long way back.

Or not...

Back on serve now at 2-2, must have been a pretty comprehensive break as well as it over very quick

Thanks CD, that's a lovely summary there. Yes, cohort is the wrong term in seeing 'the five' as a physical group together. I'd always gathered too that Gabi was more Spanish/ European, and I must admit a style that meets my own preference more. And it's great to see that team TaCo works so positively!

Interesting to see that Anna S's grass court debut is going to be in the Netherlands this coming week, rather than GB... And good luck to both girls in the game just started now, I hope it's a good one.

Was to 15 and Dart has now won 11 of the last 13 points. Held to love, broke to 15 and was 40-15 last time I checked.

Harriet now serving for the set *5-3, fine turnaround from 0-2.

She's 40-0 up as well, so 3 set points.
